TSNTyndale Study Notes:

10:44-48 On the day of Pentecost, Peter told the assembly that if they would repent, turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins, they would receive “the gift of the Holy Spirit” (2:38; cp. 19:1-7). As Cornelius and his household listened to Peter’s message, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, too, and they were baptized. They received the Holy Spirit just as the Jews did, so clearly God had shown no partiality (10:34-35). This event parallels the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem (2:1-47) and marks the spread of the Holy Spirit’s power to Gentiles (1:8; 2:39).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐπέπεσε τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντας τὸν λόγον

fell_on the Spirit ¬the Holy on all the_‹ones› hearing the word

Luke is speaking of the Holy Spirit as if it could fall on Cornelius and his guests. See how you translated the similar expression in 8:16. Alternate translation: [all the ones listening to his word received the Holy Spirit]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντας

all the_‹ones› hearing

While the believers who came with Peter from Joppa were also listening to his message, the word all refers to the Gentiles who were present. Alternate translation: [Cornelius and his guests, who were listening]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τὸν λόγον

the word

Luke is using the term word to mean what Peter was saying by using words. Alternate translation: [his message]
