Acts 13

13 Now there were [[some]][fn] in Antioch, in the existing church, prophets and teachers: both Barnabas and Simeon called Niger, and Lucius the Cyrenian, Manaen the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 And as they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, having [[all]][fn] fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them off.

4 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. 5 When they arrived in Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John as their assistant.

6 Having traveled through the [whole][fn] island as far as Paphos, they found a certain [man, a][fn] magician, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of understanding. This man, having called for Barnabas and Saul, sought to hear the word of God.

8 But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith [[since he was most gladly listening to them]].[fn] 9 But Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and said, “O full of [all][fn] deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord?

11 “And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time.” And immediately a mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those to lead him by the hand.

12 Then the proconsul, when he saw what had happened, {believed},[fn] being astonished at the teaching of {the Lord}.[fn]

13 Now when Paul and his party set sail from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia; and John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem. 14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and [having] entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day, they sat down.

15 And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, “Men and brethren, if there is a word of exhortation for the people, speak.”

16 Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and those who fear God, listen: 17 The God of this people [Israel][fn] chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm he brought them out of it. 18 And for about forty years he [bore][fn] with them in the wilderness. 19 [And][fn] When he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he distributed their land [[to them]][fn] by allotment 20 as four hundred and fifty years. And after these things, he gave judges until Samuel the prophet. 21 And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 And when he had removed him, he raised up for them David as king, to whom also he gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will do all my will.’[fn]

23 “Of this one, God, [from {the}[fn] seed][fn] according to the promise, {brought}[fn] to Israel {a savior, Jesus};[fn] 24 having been proclaimed by John before the face of his entrance a baptism of repentance to [all][fn] [the people of][fn] Israel. 25 And as John was completing his course, he said, ‘Who do you think I am? I am not he. But behold, there comes one after me, whose sandals of his feet I am not worthy to untie.’

26 “Men, brothers, sons of the family of Abraham and those among you fearing God, to us the word of [this][fn] salvation has been sent. 27 For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know him, nor even the voices of the {Prophets}[fn] which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning him. 28 And though they found no cause for death [in him],[fn] [[after judging him]][fn] they asked Pilate that he should be put to death. 29 Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning him, [[they kept asking Pilate for this one indeed to be crucified, and having succeeded again,]][fn] they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him [from the dead].[fn] 31 He was seen [for many days][fn] by those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem [[for more days]],[fn] who are [now][fn] his witnesses to the people.

32 “And we proclaim to you the promise made to {the}[fn] fathers, 33 God has fulfilled this for us, their children, in that he has raised up [[the Lord]][fn] {Jesus} [fn][[Christ]].[fn] As it is also written in the [second][fn] Psalm: ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.[fn] [[Ask from me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, and the ends of the earth as your possession.]]’[fn]

34 “But that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way, ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’[fn] 35 For also in another it says, ‘You will not allow your Holy One to see decay.’[fn]

36 “[For][fn] [indeed][fn] David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, 37 but he whom God raised up did not see corruption.

38 “Therefore, let it be known to you, men, brothers, that through this one forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, [and][fn] [[repentance]][fn] from all things from which you could not be justified in the law of Moses, 39 in this one everyone who believes is justified [[by God]].[fn]

40 “Therefore, see that the thing spoken of in the prophets does not come [upon you]:[fn] 41 ‘Look, you scoffers, be amazed and perish, for I am doing a work in your days, [a work][fn] that you will not believe, even if someone tells it to you.’ ”[fn]

42 As they [[from the synagogue of the Jews]][fn] went out, {they}[fn] urged to speak these words to them on the next Sabbath. 43 And when the synagogue was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking [to them],[fn] persuaded them to {continue}[fn] in the grace of God. [[Now it happened that throughout the whole city the word of God was being spread.]][fn]

44 On the coming Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word [[, and Paul had spoken many words]][fn] {of the Lord}.[fn] 45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict {the things}[fn] spoken by Paul, [[contradicting and]][fn] blaspheming.[fn]

46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said [[to them]],[fn] “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded [us],[fn] saying, ‘I have set you as a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”[fn]

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of {the Lord},[fn] and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region. 50 But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, stirred up [[great tribulation and]][fn] persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of {their}[fn] district. 51 But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium.

52 And the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
