SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:1–20: John the Baptizer prepared the way for Jesus

The last event in Luke 2 describes Jesus’ trip to Jerusalem when he was twelve years old. This section begins about eighteen years later. At the beginning of chapter 3, both Jesus and John the Baptizer were about thirty years old. Both men were ready to begin public ministry.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

The Preaching of John (NCV)

John the Baptist and Jesus (REB)

John the Baptizer tells people to prepare themselves for the Messiah

Parts of Luke 3:1–20 are basically the same as verses in Matthew 3:1–12. But Luke 3:1–2, 10–14, and 19–20 are not in Matthew.

Paragraph 3:15–18

The people who listened to John began to think that John himself might be the Christ/Messiah. But John made it clear that the Messiah was a different person who would come after him. The Messiah would have much greater authority and power than John had.

3:18a

With these and many other exhortations, John

3:18b

proclaimed the good news to the people.

3:18a-b

This verse is a summary and conclusion of Paragraph 3:15–18. In Greek it begins with a conjunction that is often translated as “therefore” or “thus.” The BSB does not translate this conjunction. Some other ways to introduce this conclusion in English are:

In this way

So (NASB)

Then (CSB)

In some languages there may be a special way to introduce such a conclusion. Introduce the summary or conclusion of this paragraph in a natural way in your language.

With these and many other exhortations: There are two ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as other:

  1. It means “more of the same kind.” John used more exhortations like the one in the previous verses. For example:

with many other exhortations (NET) (BSB, NIV, NJB, NASB, NET, REB, NCV, KJV, NLT, GW)

  2. It means “different.” This means that not all of John’s preaching was like the previous verses. For example:

In many different ways (GNT) (GNT, CEV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).The word ἕτερος had lost the sense of “different” and was used as a synonym for ἄλλος, “other” (Marshall).

John proclaimed the good news: The Greek word that the BSB translates as proclaimed here refers to the act of appealing to people to do something. John was urging or encouraging the people to repent (3:8a) by accepting the good news that he told them and obeying God. For example:

urged them to change their ways (GNT)

proclaimed the good news to the people: The phrase proclaimed the good news is a translation of one Greek verb. This verb also occurs in 2:10b. In this context John proclaimed to the people the message that God would soon send the Christ to save them.

Some other ways to translate this are:

told the Good News to the people (GW)

announced the good news (REB)

told them good news about the Christ

told them good/sweet news from God

UTNuW Translation Notes:

πολλὰ & καὶ ἕτερα παρακαλῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: πολλά μέν Οὖν καί ἑτέρα παρακαλῶν εὐηγγελίζετο τόν λαόν)

Alternate translation: [saying many other things to warn them]
