TSNTyndale Study Notes:

6:3 It is unlikely the Philistines were aware of Israelite worship regulations. A Philistine guilt offering would have been a payment to the deity in an attempt to avert his wrath (contrast the notion of atonement from Lev 16).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) the God of Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said if send_away DOM ark god Yisrael not send DOM=him/it empty that/for/because/then/when to_send you_all_send to=him/it guilt_offering then healed and,known to/for=you_all to/for=what not removed his/its=hand from,you_all )

This could mean: (1) they were speaking the proper name of the God of Israel or (2) they believed that Israel worshiped one of many gods, “the god of Israel.” See how you translated this in 1 Samuel 5:7.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) by all means send him a guilt offering

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said if send_away DOM ark god Yisrael not send DOM=him/it empty that/for/because/then/when to_send you_all_send to=him/it guilt_offering then healed and,known to/for=you_all to/for=what not removed his/its=hand from,you_all )

The words “by all means” are a forceful way of saying something. Alternate translation: “you must send a guilt offering”

(Occurrence 0) you will be healed

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said if send_away DOM ark god Yisrael not send DOM=him/it empty that/for/because/then/when to_send you_all_send to=him/it guilt_offering then healed and,known to/for=you_all to/for=what not removed his/its=hand from,you_all )

Alternate translation: “you will no longer be ill”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / you

(Occurrence 0) you

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said if send_away DOM ark god Yisrael not send DOM=him/it empty that/for/because/then/when to_send you_all_send to=him/it guilt_offering then healed and,known to/for=you_all to/for=what not removed his/its=hand from,you_all )

The pronoun “you” is plural, referring to all of the Philistines.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) why his hand has not been lifted off of you

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said if send_away DOM ark god Yisrael not send DOM=him/it empty that/for/because/then/when to_send you_all_send to=him/it guilt_offering then healed and,known to/for=you_all to/for=what not removed his/its=hand from,you_all )

Here “hand” is a metonym used to represent God’s power to afflict or discipline. Alternate translation: “why he has not relieved your suffering”
