ULT for see, I am about to set in place a shepherd in the land. He will not care for the perishing sheep. He will not seek out the sheep gone missing, nor heal the crippled sheep. He will not feed the sheep that are healthy, but will eat the flesh of the fattened sheep and will tear off their hooves.

UST because I am going to appoint a new shepherd for the people, one who will not take care of my people. He will be a foolish shepherd: He will ignore the dying sheep and those that have gotten lost. As for the healthy sheep, he will not feed them; instead, he will butcher them for his own food and will tear off their hooves.

BSB For behold, I will raise up a shepherd in the land who will neither care for the lost, nor seek the young, nor heal the broken, nor sustain the healthy, but he will devour the flesh of the choice sheep and tear off their hooves.

OEB For I am about to appoint a shepherd over the land. Those who are thrust down he will not visit. Those who are scattered he will not seek out. The wounded he will not heal, the sick he will not make whole, but the flesh of the fat he will devour and even their hoofs he will tear.

WEB For, behold, I will raise up a shepherd in the land who will not visit those who are cut off, neither will seek those who are scattered, nor heal that which is broken, nor feed that which is sound; but he will eat the meat of the fat sheep, and will tear their hoofs in pieces.

NET Indeed, I am about to raise up a shepherd in the land who will not take heed to the sheep headed to slaughter, will not seek the scattered, and will not heal the injured. Moreover, he will not nourish the one that is healthy but instead will eat the meat of the fat sheep and tear off their hooves.

LSV For behold, I am raising up a shepherd in the land,
The cut off he does not inspect,
The shaken off he does not seek,
And the broken he does not heal,
The standing he does not sustain,
And the flesh of the fat he eats,
And their hooves he breaks off.

FBV For I am placing a shepherd in charge of the land who won't care for those who are dying, or look for the lost,[fn] or heal the injured, or feed the healthy. Instead he will eat the meat from the fattest sheep. He even tears their hooves off.[fn]

11:16 Or “the young.”

11:16 Perhaps illustrating the extent of cruelty to the animals.

T4T because I am going to appoint a new king for the people, one who will not take care of my people. He will be like a foolish shepherd: [MET] He will not take care of those who are dying, those who are very young, those who have been injured, or those who do not have enough food. Instead, he will treat them very cruelly, like a shepherd who would [MET] kill and eat the best sheep and tear off their hoofs.

LEB For look, I am raising up a shepherd in the land who will not attend to the ones that are perishing; he will not seek the young man,[fn] he will not heal theones that are crushed and he will not sustain the healthy ones; he will devour the flesh of the fattened ones[fn] and tear aparteven their hoofs.

?:? Syriac and other ancient versions read “the wandering” or “the scattered,” as do several English translations

?:? Literally “the stall-fed”

BBE For see, I will put a sheep-keeper over the land, who will have no care for that which is cut off, and will not go in search of the wanderers, or make well what is broken, and he will not give food to that which is ill, but he will take for his food the flesh of the fat, and let their feet be broken.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

11:16 Tear off their hooves is a Hebrew idiom for a wanton and ravenous search for the last morsel of edible meat on an animal carcass (see Mic 3:3).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) I am about to set in place a shepherd in the land

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when see/lo/see! I raise_up shepherd on_the=earth the,perishing not care_for the,young not seek and,the,broken not heal the,healthy not sustain and,flesh the,fat devour and,hoofs,their tearing_off )

Here “set in place” is an idiom. Alternate translation: “I am about to appoint a shepherd in the land” or “I am about to put a shepherd in charge in the land”

(Occurrence 0) the fattened sheep

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when see/lo/see! I raise_up shepherd on_the=earth the,perishing not care_for the,young not seek and,the,broken not heal the,healthy not sustain and,flesh the,fat devour and,hoofs,their tearing_off )

Alternate translation: “the fattest sheep” or “the best sheep”

(Occurrence 0) will tear off their hooves

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when see/lo/see! I raise_up shepherd on_the=earth the,perishing not care_for the,young not seek and,the,broken not heal the,healthy not sustain and,flesh the,fat devour and,hoofs,their tearing_off )

This was probably done as an act of cruelty.
