3There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; 2this one came to {him}[fn] at night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

3Jesus answered [and said to him],[fn] “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born from above,[fn] he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

4Nicodemus says to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?”

5Jesus answered, “Truly, [truly,][fn] I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot {enter}[fn] the kingdom of {God}.[fn]

6“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7“Do not be amazed that I said to you,[fn] ‘You must be born from above.’[fn]

8“The wind blows where it wishes and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from {and}[fn] where it goes; so is everyone who is born of the [[water and the]][fn] Spirit.”

9Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can these things be?”

10Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and you do not understand these things?”

11Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak what we know and testify what we have seen, and you[fn] do not receive our testimony.[fn]

12If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?[fn]

13And no one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man [[who is in heaven]].[fn]

14And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, thus it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up, 15so that everyone who believes in him may [[not perish but]][fn] have eternal life.

16For God so loved the world, that he gave {the}[fn] unique Son [[into the world]],[fn] so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

17For God did not send {the}[fn] Son into the world in order to judge the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

18The one who believes in him is not judged; [but][fn] the one who does not believe [[in him]][fn] has already been judged, because he has not believed in the name of {the unique Son of God}.[fn]

19And this is the judgment: that [the][fn] light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil.

20[For][fn] Everyone who does evil hates the light [and does not come to the light,][fn] so that their deeds may not be exposed [[as evil]].[fn]

21[[But][fn] the one who does the truth comes to the light, in order that their deeds may be revealed, that they have been done in God.][fn] [[For in God is peace established.]][fn]

22After this, Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judea, and there he spent time with them and baptized. 23Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there, and people came and were baptized; 24for John had not yet been thrown into prison.

25Then a dispute arose between John's disciples and {a Jew}[fn] about purification. 26And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, this one is baptizing and all are coming to him.” 27John answered and said, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28You yourselves testify to me [that][fn] I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before that one.’

29“The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices with joy because of the bridegroom's voice. This joy of mine has been fulfilled. 30That one must increase, but I must decrease.”

31The one who comes from above is above all; he who is {of}[fn] the earth is from the earth[fn] [and speaks from the earth].[fn] The one coming from heaven [is above all];[fn][fn] 32[[And]][fn] what he has seen and heard, [this][fn] he testifies, and no one receives his testimony.

33The one who has received his testimony has sealed[fn] that God is true.

34For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for {he}[fn] does not give by measure [the Spirit].[fn]

35The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.

36The one who believes in the Son has eternal life; [but][fn] the one who disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. [[And after these things, John was handed over.]][fn]

3:11-21, It is disputed whether verses 11-21 are Jesus' words or a narrative interlude by the author. Most regard all of the verses 13-21 are quoting Jesus, while some believe a narrative interpolation begins at verse 11, 13, or at verse 16. The indication that it might begin here is (1) “you” is in the plural both in verses 11 and 12, (2) “we speak what we know and testify what we have seen” contains 4 plural verbs and, (3) “our” is plural in reference to “our testimony.” According to UBS Handbooks for New Testament (20 Vols.) (John 3:11), “The shift from singular to plural should be carefully noted. The verse begins with the first person singular (I) addressing the second person singular (you). The shift is then made to the first-person plural (we... our) addressing the second person plural (none of you). A number of theories exist as to why this shift is made, but the most probable solution is that John has shifted the time perspective from Jesus' day to the time in which he writes his Gospel. If so, then 'we' represents the Christian believers of John's own day who are in dialogue with the Jews represented by 'you' (plural).”
