3:22-36 John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the one who is truly from above (3:31); this requires John’s followers to shift their allegiance to Jesus.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ὁ Ἰωάννης
¬the John
Here, John refers to Jesus’ cousin, often referred to as “John the Baptist.” (See: johnthebaptist) It does not refer to the apostle John, who wrote this Gospel. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning explicitly. Alternate translation: “John the Baptist” or “John the Immerser”
Note 2 topic: translate-names
Αἰνὼν
Aenon
Aenon is the name of a town near the Jordan River close to Samaria. Aenon is the Aramaic word for springs of water, which explains John’s comment in the next clause about there being much water there.
Note 3 topic: translate-names
τοῦ Σαλείμ
¬the Salim
Salim is the name of a town near the Jordan River close to Samaria.
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ἐβαπτίζοντο
/were_being/_baptized
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you must state who did the action, John implies that John the Baptist did it. Alternate translation: “John was baptizing them” or “he was baptizing them”
