Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

3.30 Illum oportet crescere. Gaudeo ad vocem sponsi. Ille sponsus crescet, id est invenietur esse Christus, qui putabatur propheta. Ego minuar, quia ejus propheta inveniar, qui Christus putabar. Illum oportet crescere. Cui rei attestatur passio utriusque: Christus in cruce exaltatur, Joannes capite minuitur. Attestatur et creatura. Joannes natus est decrescentibus diebus, Christus vero crescentibus.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:22-36 John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the one who is truly from above (3:31); this requires John’s followers to shift their allegiance to Jesus.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐκεῖνον δεῖ αὐξάνειν

that_‹one› ˱it˲_/is/_fitting /to_be/_increasing

Here, that one refers to Jesus, whom John the Baptist called “the bridegroom” in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [It is necessary for Jesus to increase] or [It is necessary for the bridegroom to increase]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

αὐξάνειν & ἐλαττοῦσθαι

/to_be/_increasing & /to_be/_being_made_less

John the Baptist uses increase to refer to growing in importance and influence, while decrease refers to diminishing in importance and influence. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [to be more influential … to be less influential]
