Pericope Adulterae Interpolation[fn]

[[But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2Early in the morning he {came}[fn] again to the temple. All the people came to him, [[and he sat down and taught them]].[fn] 3The scribes and the Pharisees brought [[to him]][fn] a woman who had been caught in {adultery},[fn] and placing her in the midst 4they say to him, [[testing,]][fn] [[so that they might have an accusation against him,]][fn] “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5{Now in the Law, Moses commanded us}[fn] to stone such. So what do you say?” 6[[This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him.]] [fn]

Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground [[not pretending]].[fn] 7And as they continued to ask [[him]],[fn] he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground [[the sins of each of them]].[fn] 9But {when they heard it},[fn] they went away one by one [[convicted by their conscience]],[fn] beginning with the elders [[even to the last]],[fn] and {he}[fn] was left alone, and the woman in the middle. 10Jesus having stood up [[and seeing no one but the woman]][fn] and said to {her, “Woman,}[fn] where are {they}?[fn] Has no one condemned you?” 11She said [[to him]],[fn] “No one, Lord.” And {Jesus}[fn] said [[to her]],[fn] “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”]][fn]

Continuation from John 7:52

[Again][fn] Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.”

Jesus [answered and][fn] said to them, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; [but][fn] you do not know where I come from or where I am going.

“You judge according to the flesh; [[but]][fn] I judge no one. 16[And][fn] if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I and the {Father}[fn] who sent me.

“[And][fn] In your Law it is written that the testimony of two men is true.[fn] 18I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”

They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered [[and said]][fn] [[to him]],[fn] “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know {my}[fn] Father also.”

These words {he}[fn] spoke in the treasury [teaching in the temple];[fn] but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

So {he}[fn] said to them [again],[fn] “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”

And he was saying to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24[Therefore][fn] I told you [that][fn] you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.”

So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. 26I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me [[the Father]][fn] is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.”

They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father [[, the God]].[fn] 28Therefore, Jesus said [to them][fn] [[again]][fn] [[that]],[fn] “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing of myself, but as {the Father}[fn] taught me, I speak these things. 29And the one who sent me is with me; {he}[fn] has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.”

As he was saying these things, many believed in him.

Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you remain in my word, truly you are [my][fn] disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

{They}[fn] answered him [[and said]],[fn] “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say [that][fn] we will become free?” 34Jesus answered [them],[fn] “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave [to sin].[fn] 35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36[So][fn] If the son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

“I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38What I have seen with {the}[fn] Father, I speak [[these things]];[fn] and therefore, what you have {heard}[fn] from {the}[fn] father, do [[these things]].”[fn]

[[Therefore]][fn] They answered and said to him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus says [to them],[fn] “If you {are}[fn] children of Abraham, you would be doing the works of Abraham, 40but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.”

[[But]][fn] You do the works of your father. They said [then][fn] to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality; we have one father, God.”

[[Therefore]][fn] Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I {came}[fn] forth from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.

“{Why do you not understand what I say? Because}[fn] you are unable to hear my word. 44You are of [your father][fn] the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and {does not stand}[fn] in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45But because I tell the truth [[to you]],[fn] you do not believe me.

“[Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?][fn] 47Whoever is of God hears the words of God. {The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God}.”[fn]

[[Therefore]][fn] The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”

Jesus answered [[and said]],[fn] “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it; [and][fn] he is the judge.

Truly, truly, I say to you, {if anyone}[fn] keeps my word, he will certainly not see death into the age.”[fn]

The Jews [therefore][fn] said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death into the age.’ 53Are you greater than [our father][fn] Abraham, {who}[fn] died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself to be?”

Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is {our}[fn] God.’ 55Yet you have not known him, but I know him. If I were to {say}[fn] that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word.

“Abraham your father rejoiced to {see}[fn] my day, and he saw it and was glad.”

So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and Abraham {has}[fn] seen you?”

[[Therefore]][fn] Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham [was],[fn] I am.” 59So they picked up stones to throw at him; [but][fn] Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple [[going through the midst of them, and so passed by]].[fn]

Absent from THGNT ‖ Double bracketed in NA28 and SBLGNT. ‖ Included in D(05) Latin(d e ff2) BYZ and TR.UBS Handbooks for New Testament (20 vol.) states regarding the pericope, “is not found in the earlier and better Greek manuscripts, it differs in style and vocabulary from the rest of John's Gospel, and it interrupts the sequence of 7.52 and 8.12 and following. But it was evidently a widely circulated account in certain parts of the early church and finally found its place in various ancient manuscripts. In terms of style and vocabulary, it is closer to the Lukan writings than it is to John, and in some ancient manuscripts it is even found after Luke 21.38.” The UBS committee regards this passage as original history, though not originally located within John's gospel.
