BLB YHN Chapter 4

YHN 4 ©

4Therefore when Jesus knew that Pharisees heard that Jesus makes and baptizes more disciples than John 2(although indeed Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples), 3He left Judea and went away again into Galilee. 4And it was necessary for Him to pass through Samaria. 5Therefore He comes to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6And Jacob's well was there. Therefore Jesus, being wearied from the journey, thus was sitting at the well. The hour was about the sixth. 7A woman out of Samaria comes to draw water. Jesus says to her, "Give Me to drink." 8For His disciples had gone away into the city, that they might buy food. 9Therefore the Samaritan woman says to Him, "How do You, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no association with Samaritans. 10Jesus answered and said to her, "If you had known the gift of God and who it is saying to you, 'Give Me to drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given to you living water." 11The woman says to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; from where then do You have the living water? 12Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his livestock?" 13Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone drinking of this water will thirst again; 14but whoever may drink of the water that I will give him will never thirst, to the age. Instead, the water that I will give to him will become in him a spring of water, welling up into eternal life." 15The woman says to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I might not thirst, nor come here to draw water." 16He says to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." 17The woman answered and said to Him, "I do not have a husband." Jesus says to her, "You have spoken correctly, 'I do not have a husband.' 18For you have had five husbands, and he whom you have now is not your husband; this you have spoken truly." 19The woman says to Him, "Sir, I understand that You are a prophet. 20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary to worship." 21Jesus says to her, "Believe Me, woman, that an hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews. 23But an hour is coming and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father also seeks such who worship Him. 24God is Spirit, and it behooves those worshiping Him to worship in spirit and truth." 25The woman says to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming, who is called Christ; when He comes, He will tell us all things." 26Jesus says to her, "I who am speaking to you am He." 27And upon this, His disciples came and were amazed that He was speaking with a woman. But no one said, "What do You seek?" Or "Why do You speak with her?" 28Then the woman left her water pot and went away into the city, and says to the men, 29"Come, see a man who told me all things I ever did. Can it be that this is the Christ?" 30They went forth out of the city and were coming unto Him. 31But in the meantime the disciples were asking Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." 32But He said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know." 33Therefore the disciples were saying to one another, "No one brought Him anything to eat?" 34Jesus says to them, "My food is that I should do the will of the One having sent Me, and should finish His work. 35Do you not say that it is yet four months and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, because they are already white toward harvest! 36The one reaping receives a reward and gathers fruit unto eternal life, so that the one sowing and the one reaping may rejoice together. 37For in this, the saying is true, that is, 'One is sowing, and another is reaping.' 38I sent you to reap what you have not toiled for; others have toiled, and you have entered into their labor." 39And out of that city, many of the Samaritans believed in Him, because of the word of the woman testifying, "He told me all things I ever did." 40Therefore when the Samaritans came to Him, they were asking Him to abide with them, and He stayed there two days. 41And many more believed because of His word. 42And they were saying to the woman, "No longer because of your speech do we believe; for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world." 43And after the two days, He went forth from there into Galilee. 44For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in the own hometown. 45Therefore when He came into Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen the greatness of all the things He had done in Jerusalem during the feast, for they themselves also had gone to the feast. 46Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee, where He had made the water wine. And there was in Capernaum a certain royal official whose son was sick. 47Having heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was asking that He would come down and heal his son; for he was about to die. 48Therefore Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe." 49The royal official says to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies." 50Jesus says to him, "Go, your son lives." The man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and he went on his way. 51And already as he is going down, his servants met him, saying that his son lives. 52Therefore he inquired from them the hour in which he got better. Therefore they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him." 53Therefore the father knew that it was in that hour at which Jesus said to him, "Your son lives." And he himself believed, and his whole household. 54This is now again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judea into Galilee.
