TSNTyndale Study Notes:

Ps 55 The psalmist is faced with adversaries whose leader is a former friend (55:12-14), and he is overwhelmed with anguish. He turns to the Lord in prayer and commits himself to the Lord for redress (55:22-23). Jesus experienced similar suffering when his friend (Judas) betrayed him. He also experienced the answer to the psalmist’s prayer: (1) by taking the place of the wicked and receiving their judgment (Isa 53:7-9), and (2) by committing himself to the Father, who rescued (Luke 23:46) and rewarded him (Isa 53:10-12).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

Let death come suddenly on them

(Some words not found in UHB: which/who together take_sweet counsel in=house_of ʼₑlhīmv walked in/on/at/with,throng )

Death is spoken of as if it were a person that could attack people. Alternate translation: “Let my enemies die suddenly”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

let them go down alive to Sheol

(Some words not found in UHB: which/who together take_sweet counsel in=house_of ʼₑlhīmv walked in/on/at/with,throng )

Dying suddenly is spoken of as if people were to go to Sheol so fast that they do not even die first. Alternate translation: “let them suddenly go to Sheol”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

wickedness is where they live

(Some words not found in UHB: which/who together take_sweet counsel in=house_of ʼₑlhīmv walked in/on/at/with,throng )

Wickedness is spoken of as if it were a thing that could be in a certain place. The habitual wickedness of his enemies is spoken of as if wickedness were with them or near them. Alternate translation: “they always do wicked things where they live”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

right among them

(Some words not found in UHB: which/who together take_sweet counsel in=house_of ʼₑlhīmv walked in/on/at/with,throng )

This phrase intensifies the idea of wickedness being very near them. Here wickedness is spoken of as being not only in their homes, but right where they are. Alternate translation: “They always do wicked things wherever they are” or “wherever they are”
