TSNTyndale Study Notes:

13:19-22 no blacksmiths: The Philistines kept the Israelites unarmed by gaining a monopoly on the iron necessary to make weapons. Iron technology had not existed long in Canaan; it might have developed in the Aegean area, and metalworking skills were possibly introduced into Canaan through seafaring peoples, including the Philistines.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) there were no swords or spears

(Some words not found in UHB: and=it_was in/on=day battle and=not he/it_was_found sword and,spear in/on/at/with,hand all/each/any/every the,people which/who DOM Shāʼūl and=DOM Yōnātān and,had with,Saul and,with,Jonathan his/its=son )

This explains in part why Saul’s army was afraid. They did not have any weapons to fight.
