15 Now [all][fn] the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen [to him].[fn] 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling, saying, “This one welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
3 So he told them this parable, [saying,][fn] 4 “Which man among you, having a hundred sheep and [losing one of them,][fn] does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 And finding, he places it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep.’
7 “[[But]][fn] I say to you [that][fn] in this way there will be joy in heaven over one sinner repenting, more than over ninety-nine righteous ones who have no need of repentance.
8 “Or what woman, having ten [silver coins],[fn] if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until [when][fn] she finds it? 9 And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’
10 “Thus, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
11 And he said, “A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘[Father,][fn] Give me the share of the property that falls to me.’ {So}[fn] he divided his livelihood between them. 13 And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his {property}[fn] by living recklessly. 14 And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into {his}[fn] fields to feed pigs. 16 And he longed {to be satisfied}[fn] with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I am perishing here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.’ 20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; [[and]][fn] I am no longer worthy to be called your son. [[Make me like one of your hired men.]]’[fn]
22 But the father said to his servants, ‘[Quickly],[fn] bring out the best robe [and put it on him],[fn] and put a ring on his hand and sandals [on his feet],[fn] 23 and {bring}[fn] the fattened calf and sacrifice it, and eating, let us rejoice, 24 for this son of mine was dead and has come to life; [[and]][fn] [he was lost and has been found.]’[fn] And they began to celebrate.
25 “Now his older son was in the field; and as he was coming, he approached the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And calling one of the servants, he inquired what these things might be.
27 But he said [to him][fn] [[that]],[fn] ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ 28 [But][fn] he was angry and did not want to go in. {But}[fn] his father came out and pleaded with him.
29 But he answered {his}[fn] father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat [[from your flock]],[fn] that I might {celebrate}[fn] with my friends. 30 {But when this son of yours came, who has squandered your livelihood with prostitutes, you sacrificed [for him][fn] the fattened calf}!’[fn]
31 And he said to him, ‘[Son,][fn] You are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 But it was necessary to rejoice and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.’ ”
