AICNT LUKE Chapter 4

LUKE 4 ©

4But Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit[fn] [, returned][fn] from the Jordan and was led [by the Spirit][fn] {in}[fn] the wilderness 2for forty days, being tempted by the {devil}.[fn] And he ate nothing during those days, and when they were finished, [[afterwards,]][fn] he was hungry.

3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command {this stone}[fn] to become bread.” 4Jesus answered [him][fn] [[saying]],[fn] “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone [[but by every word of God]].’ ”[fn]

5And {he}[fn] having led him up [[into a high mountain]],[fn] showed him all the kingdoms of the world[fn] in a moment of time, 6and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7Therefore, if you [[fall down and]][fn] worship before me, all will be yours.” 8Jesus answered him, [[“get behind me Satan! For”]][fn] “It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve him alone.’ ”[fn]

9And he led him to Jerusalem and he stood [[him]][fn] on the pinnacle of the temple and said [to him],[fn] “If you are the Son of God,[fn] throw yourself down [from here];[fn] 10for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ 11and [that][fn] ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”[fn]

12And Jesus answered him, “It is {said},[fn] ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”[fn]

13And after completing every temptation, the devil departed from him for a time.

14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report went out through all the surrounding region about him. 15And he was teaching in {their}[fn] synagogues, being glorified[fn] by all.

16And he came to Nazareth, where he {had been brought up},[fn] and he entered, as was {his}[fn] custom, on the Sabbath day into the synagogue and stood up to read. 17And [the scroll of][fn] the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found [the place][fn] where it was written, 18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed[fn] me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me [[to heal those who are brokenhearted,]][fn] to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send out those who are broken in release,[fn] 19to proclaim the acceptable year [[and day of retribution]][fn] of the Lord.”[fn]

20And folding the scroll, he gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21He began to say to them [that],[fn] “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

22And all were bearing witness to him and marveling at the words of grace that were coming out of his mouth, and they said, “Is this not the son of Joseph?” 23And he said to them, “Surely you will say to me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself; whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.’ ”

24And he said, “Truly [[Truly]][fn] I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.”

25“[But][fn] In truth, I say to you, [[that]][fn] there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up [for][fn] three years and six months, and a [great][fn] famine came upon all the land, 26and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

28And all in the synagogue were filled with wrath when they heard these things, 29and they rose up and they cast [him][fn] out of the city and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built [, {so that they might}[fn] throw him down].[fn] 30But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.

31And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, [[the coastal region in the territories of Zebulun and Naphtali,]][fn] and he was teaching them on the Sabbath; 32and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority.

33And in the synagogue there was a man having an unclean {demonic}[fn] spirit, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34[[saying]][fn] “[Ha!][fn] What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” 35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him.” And the demon throwing him [into the midst][fn] [[cried out and]][fn] came out of him [without harming him].[fn] 36And there was [[great]][fn] amazement upon all, and they spoke with one another, saying, “What is this word, that with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they come out?”

37And the report about him went out into every place of the surrounding region.

38But rising up {from}[fn] the synagogue, he entered into the house of Simon [[and Andrew]].[fn] Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a great fever, and they asked him about her. 39And standing over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her; immediately {she rose up and served}[fn] them.

40As the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each one [of them][fn] and healed them. 41And demons were also coming out [from many],[fn] crying out and saying, “You are [[the Christ]][fn] the Son of God.” And rebuking them, he did not allow them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ.

42And when it was day, he went out and proceeded to a deserted place; and the crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them. 43But he said to them, “I must also proclaim the kingdom of God to the other cities, {because}[fn] for this I was sent.” 44And he was preaching in the synagogues of {Judea}.[fn]
