22 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching. 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to destroy him, for they feared the people.
3 Then Satan entered into Judas {called}[fn] Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4 And he went away and discussed with the chief priests [[and scribes]][fn] [and officers][fn] [[of the temple]][fn] how he might betray him [to them].[fn] 5 And they [were glad and][fn] agreed to give [him][fn] money. 6 [And he consented.][fn] And he was seeking an opportunity to betray him [to them][fn] in the absence of a crowd.
7 Then came the day of {Unleavened Bread},[fn] [on][fn] which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
9 They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare [[for you]]?”[fn] 10 He said [to them],[fn] “Behold, as you enter the city, a man carrying a jar [of water][fn] will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters, 11 And you will say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says [to you],[fn] “Where is {the}[fn] guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?” ’ 12 And he will show you a [large][fn] upper room furnished; there prepare.”
13 And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the [[twelve]][fn] apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you [that][fn] I will not eat of it [[again]][fn] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17 And having taken the cup, having given thanks, “Take [this];[fn] [and][fn] divide it among yourselves. 18 For I say to you [that][fn] [from now on][fn] I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “[[Take]][fn] This is my body.” [“Which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”][fn]
20 [And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”][fn]
21 “But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is [with me][fn] upon the table. 22 {For}[fn] the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe [to that man][fn] by whom he is betrayed!”
23 And they began to question one another, who [among themselves][fn] could be the one to do this.
24 There also arose a dispute among them; {as to which of them was considered to be greatest}.[fn] 25 But {he}[fn] said to them, “The kings of the nations rule over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But you are not so, but let the greater among you become as the younger,[fn] and the leader as the one who serves.
27 “{For who is greater, the one reclining at the table or the one serving? Is it not the one reclining at the table? Yet I am among you as the one serving}.[fn]
28 “You {are}[fn] those who have stayed with me in my trials, 29 And I {appoint for you,}[fn] as my Father has appointed for me, a kingdom, 30 so that you may eat and {drink}[fn] at my table in {my}[fn] kingdom and you will sit on thrones judging the [twelve][fn] tribes of Israel.
31 [[And the Lord said,]][fn] “Simon, [Simon,][fn] behold, Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat; 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
33 He said to him, “Lord, I am [ready][fn] to go with you both to prison and to death.” 34 But {he}[fn] said [[to him]],[fn] “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today {until}[fn] you deny three times that you know me.”
35 And he said to them, “When I sent you out without a purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 {But}[fn] he said [to them],[fn] “But now, let the one who has a purse take it, and likewise a bag. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I say [to you][fn] that this which is written must be fulfilled in me, ‘And he was reckoned with lawless ones.’ And [indeed,][fn] the end concerning me is at hand.”[fn]
38 They said [[to him]],[fn] “[Lord,][fn] Look, here are two swords.” He said [to them],[fn] “It is enough.”
39 And he went out and proceeded as was his custom to the Mount of Olives; [and][fn] {the}[fn] disciples followed him. 40 When he arrived [to the place],[fn] he said to them, “Pray not [to enter][fn] into temptation.”
41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, {if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done}.”[fn]
43 [[And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.]][fn]
45 And rising from prayer, coming to {the}[fn] disciples, he found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation.”
47 [[But]][fn] While he was still speaking, behold, a [[large]][fn] crowd, and the one called Judas [[Iscariot]],[fn] one of the twelve, was leading them and approached {Jesus to kiss him}.[fn] [[For he had given them this sign, "Whomever I kiss, he is the one.]][fn] 48 But {Jesus}[fn] said to {him},[fn] “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 Seeing the things about to happen, they said [[to him]],[fn] “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 [But][fn] Jesus answered and said, “ Let it be until this point. And [[stretching out his hand,]][fn] {touching his ear, he healed him}.[fn]
52 But {Jesus}[fn] said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 Every day when I was with you in the temple, you did not lay hands on me, but this is your hour and the power of darkness.”
54 And having seized him, they led [away and brought][fn] him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance.
55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, [[and]][fn] Peter was sitting among them [[, warming himself]].[fn] 56 But a certain servant girl, seeing him sitting in the light and looking intently at him, said, “This man was also with him.” 57 But he denied {it},[fn] saying, “I do not know him [, woman].”[fn]
58 And after a short while another seeing him said [[the same,]][fn] [“You also are one of them.”][fn] But {Peter}[fn] said, “[Man,][fn] I am not.”
59 And after a short time another seeing him insisted “Truly [[, I say]][fn] “This one also was with him, for he is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61 {{And the Lord}[fn] turned and looked at Peter}.[fn] And {Peter}[fn] remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him [that],[fn] “Before the rooster crows [today],[fn] you will deny me three times [[not knowing me]][fn].” 62 [And going out, {he}[fn] wept bitterly.][fn]
63 And the men who were holding {him}[fn] mocked [him],[fn] [beating him,][fn] 64 and [they covered him;][fn] [[they struck his face and]][fn] they were [asking,][fn] saying, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” 65 And many other things, blaspheming,[fn] they said against him.
66 And when day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away to their council, 67 saying, “If you are the Christ[fn] [tell us].”[fn] [But][fn] He said to them, “If I tell [you],[fn] you will not believe; 68 [But][fn] [[even]][fn] If I ask, you will not answer [[or let me go]].[fn] 69 [But][fn] From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
70 And they all said, “Are you then the Son of God?” And he replied to them, “You say that I am.” 71 And they said, “What further need do we have of {testimony}?[fn] We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth.”

22:19b-20, Verses 19b-20 are absent from some manuscripts. D(05) Latin(a b e ff2 i it). ‖ The text is supported by 𝔓75 ℵ(01) A(02) B(03) C(04) W(032) BYZ TR NA28 SBLGNT THGNT. ‖ It is double bracketed in the critical edition of Westcott-Hort. ‖ According to Metzger, “Considerations in favor of the originality of the longer text include the following: (a) The external evidence supporting the shorter reading represents only part of the Western text-type, whereas the other representatives of the Western text join with witnesses belonging to all the other ancient text-types in support of the longer reading. (b) It is easier to suppose that the editor of manuscript D(05), puzzled by the order of cup-bread-cup, eliminated the second mention of the cup without being concerned about the reversed order of cup-bread, than that the editor of the longer version brought in from Paul the second mention of the cup in order to correct the order and let the first mention of the cup remain. (c) The rise of the shorter version can be accounted for in terms of the theory of disciplina arcana, that is, in order to protect the Eucharist from being profaned, one or more copies of the Gospel according to Luke, prepared for circulation among non-Christian readers, omitted the sacramental formula after the beginning words. Considerations in favor of the originality of the shorter text include the following: (a) Generally in NT textual criticism the shorter reading is to be preferred. (b) Since the words in vv. 19b and 20 are suspiciously similar to Paul’s words in 1 Cor 11:24b-25, it appears that Paul’s letter was the source for the addition into the shorter text. (c) Verses 19b-20 contain several linguistic features that are not characteristic of Luke’s style.” (R. L. Omanson and B. M.
