AICNT LUKE Chapter 7

LUKE 7 ©

7{After he had finished [all][fn] his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum}.[fn]

2{A certain centurion had a servant who}[fn] was ill and about to die, was highly valued by him. 3Having heard about Jesus, he sent [to him][fn] elders of the Jews, asking him to come and save his servant. 4When they came [to Jesus],[fn] they earnestly pleaded with him, saying [[to him]],[fn] “He is worthy for you to grant this, 5[for][fn] he loves our nation and he himself built our synagogue for us.”

6So Jesus went with them. Already, not far from his house, the centurion sent friends [[to him]],[fn] saying [to him],[fn] “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. 7[Therefore, I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you.][fn] But [[just]][fn] say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

9When Jesus heard these things, he marveled[fn] [at him],[fn] and {turning to the crowd [following him],[fn] he said, “[[Truly]][fn] I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”}[fn]

10{And returning to the house, the ones sent found the [[sick]][fn] servant in good health.}[fn]

11And {it happened in the following,}[fn] he went into a city [called][fn] Nain and his disciples were accompanying [him],[fn] [[a considerable number,]][fn] along with a large crowd. 12[[And it happened that]][fn] As he approached the city gate, [behold],[fn] a [dead][fn] only son was being carried out, his mother was a widow; and a considerable crowd from the city was with her. 13{And seeing her, the Lord}[fn] had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”

14And coming forward, he touched the bier[fn], and those carrying it stood still, and he said, “Young man, [[Young man,]][fn] I say to you, arise.”

15And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and he gave him to his mother. 16Fear seized everyone, and they glorified God, saying, “A prophet has risen among us,” and “God [[for his good]][fn] has visited his people.” 17And this word spread throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

18{And John's disciples reported to him about all these things. And [John][fn] calling}[fn] two of his disciples, 19{sent them to {the Lord},[fn] saying,}[fn] “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect {someone else}?”[fn]

20When the men came to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is coming, or should we expect someone else?’ ” 21In that [[very]][fn] hour, he healed many from diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and {to many blind he granted sight}.[fn] 22And in response {he}[fn] said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen [[with your eyes]][fn] and [[your ears have]][fn] heard: [[for]][fn] the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, [and][fn] the deaf hear; the dead are raised; the poor have good news preached to them. 23And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

24After the messengers of John had departed, he began to speak to the crowds about John,

“What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

25“But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are in splendid clothing and luxury are in the palaces.

26“But what did you go out to see? A prophet? [Yes,][fn] I say to you, and more than [a prophet].[fn] [[For no one is greater among those born of women than the prophet John the Baptist.]][fn]

27“This is the one about whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way [before you].[fn][fn]

28“[[Truly,]][fn] I say to you [[that]][fn] [, among those born of women, there is no one like [[the prophet]][fn] John [[the baptist]];[fn] but][fn] the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

29And all the people who heard this, and the tax collectors, justified[fn] God, having been baptized with the baptism of John; 30but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God [for themselves],[fn] not being baptized [by him].[fn]

31[[And the Lord said,]][fn] “To what then will I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another [[and]][fn] saying, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we mourned [[to you]],[fn] and you did not weep.’

33“For John the Baptist has come neither eating [bread][fn] nor drinking [wine],[fn] and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35And Wisdom is justified by [all][fn] her children.”

36Now one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. 37And behold, a woman who was a sinner in the city, and knowing that he was reclining in the house of the Pharisee, brought an alabaster jar of ointment 38and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.

39{But when}[fn] the Pharisee {who had invited him}[fn] saw this, he said to himself [saying],[fn] “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.”

40And Jesus, answering, said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he said, “Teacher, say it.” 41[[He said,]][fn] “There were two debtors to a certain moneylender; one owed five hundred denarii[fn], and the other fifty [[denarii]].[fn] 42[[But]][fn] since they had nothing to pay, he forgave them both. Which [of them,][fn] [[he said,]][fn] will love him more?” 43[[But]][fn] Simon answered, “I suppose the one to whom he forgave more.” And {he}[fn] said to him, “You have judged rightly.”

44Then, turning to the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with {her hair}.[fn] 45You gave me no kiss, but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed [my feet][fn] with ointment. 47[[Not]][fn] For this reason I say to you, {her many sins are forgiven}.[fn] [For she loved much; but to whom little is forgiven, loves little.]”[fn] 48And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

49And those who were reclining with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50And he said to the woman, “[[Woman,]][fn] Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
