AICNT LUKE Chapter 24

LUKE 24 ©

24But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared [[and some were with them]].[fn] [[They were wondering among themselves, "Who will indeed roll away the stone?"]][fn] 2[[And having come]][fn] They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body [of the Lord][fn] [Jesus].[fn]

4And it happened, as they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in {dazzling apparel}.[fn] 5But when they became fearful and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6[He is not here, but has risen.][fn] Remember {how}[fn] he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee, 7saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of [sinful][fn] men, be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” 8And they remembered his words.

9And having returned [from the tomb],[fn] they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10[Now there were][fn] Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and the others with them. They told these things to the apostles, 11and {these}[fn] words seemed to them like nonsense, and they did not believe them.

12[But Peter, having risen, ran to the tomb and stooping down, he sees the linen cloths [[lying]][fn] [alone],[fn] and he went away to himself, marveling at what had happened.][fn]

13And [behold,][fn] two of them on that very day were going to a village [[one hundred]][fn] sixty stadia away from Jerusalem, named {Emmaus}.[fn] 14and they were talking [with each other][fn] about all these things that had happened. 15And it happened that as they were talking and discussing, Jesus [himself][fn] came near and went with them, 16but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

17But he said [to them],[fn] “What are these words that you are exchanging with each other as you walk [[, looking sad]]?”[fn] [And they stood still, looking sad.][fn] 18But {one named}[fn] Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only one living in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19And he said to them, “What things?”

[But they said][fn] [to him,][fn] “The things about Jesus {of Nazareth},[fn] who became a man, a prophet powerful {deed and word}[fn] before God and all the people, 20{just as}[fn] the high priests and our rulers handed [him][fn] over for the judgment of death and crucified him. 21But {were hoping}[fn] that he {is}[fn] the one to redeem Israel.

“[And][fn] Indeed, with all these things, {this}[fn] is the third day since these things happened. 22But also some women, [from among us,][fn] astonished us, having gone early in the morning to the tomb; 23and when they did not find his body, they came back saying [also][fn] that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.”

25And he said to them, “O foolish men, and slow of heart [to believe][fn] concerning all that the prophets have spoken! 26{Was it not necessary that the Christ[fn] should suffer these things}[fn] and to enter into his {glory}?”[fn]

27{And beginning with Moses and from all the Prophets, he interpreted}[fn] to them in [all][fn] the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28And they drew near to the village where they were going, and he made as though to go further. 29And they urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day has [already][fn] declined.” And he went in [to stay][fn] with them.

30And it happened that, when he reclined [with them],[fn] he took the bread, blessed it, and [breaking it,][fn] gave it to them. 31And [[having taken the bread from them,]][fn] their eyes were opened [and they recognized him];[fn] and he became invisible to them.

32And they said to each other, “Was not our heart burning [within us][fn] as he spoke to us on the way, [[and]][fn] as he opened the Scriptures to us?”

33And rising up that very hour, they returned to Jerusalem [[in sorrow]][fn] and found the eleven and those with them gathered together, 34saying, “The Lord has [truly][fn] been raised and has appeared to Simon.” 35And they were explaining the things on the road and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

36While they were saying these things, {he}[fn] himself stood among them. [And he said to them, “Peace to you,”][fn] [[“It is I; do not be afraid.”]][fn]

37But having been startled and becoming frightened, they thought the were seeing a {spirit}.[fn]

38And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your {heart}?[fn] 39See my hands and [my][fn] feet, that I am he; touch [me][fn] and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see me having.” 40[And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.][fn]

41And while they still did not believe for joy, and marveling, he said [to them],[fn] “Do you have any food here?” 42And they gave him a piece of broiled fish [[and some honeycomb]].[fn] 43And taking it, he ate it in their presence. [[He took the leftovers and gave them to them.]][fn]

44And he said to them, “These are {my}[fn] words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and [[in]][fn] the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46and said to them, “Thus it is written [[and thus it was necessary]][fn] that the Christ should suffer and rise [from the dead][fn] on the third day, 47and that repentance {for}[fn] the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48[[But]][fn] You are witnesses of these things.

49“And [behold][fn] I am sending the promise {of my Father}[fn] upon you. But stay in the city [[of Jerusalem]][fn] until you are clothed with power from on high.”

50And he led them {out as far as}[fn] Bethany, and lifting up {his}[fn] hands, he blessed them. 51And it happened that, as he was blessing them, he parted from them [, and was carried up into heaven].[fn]

52And they, [having worshiped him,][fn] returned to Jerusalem with [great][fn] joy, 53and were continually [in the temple,][fn] {blessing}[fn] God. [[Amen]][fn]
