3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor [of Judea],[fn] and Herod [was tetrarch of Galilee],[fn] and his brother Philip was tetrarch [of the region of {Iturea}[fn] and Trachonitis,][fn] and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.
3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance [for the forgiveness of sins],[fn] 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, [[saying]][fn] “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make {his}[fn] paths straight.
5 “Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become smooth ways; 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of {God}[fn].’”[fn]
7 So he said to the crowds coming out to be baptized {by}[fn] him, “You brood[fn] of vipers, who warned you {to flee from}[fn] the impending [wrath]?[fn] 8 Produce {fruit}[fn] worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones. 9 Indeed, the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore, every tree not producing [good][fn] fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 And the crowds were questioning him, saying, “What [then][fn] should we do [[so that we may be saved]]?”[fn] 11 In response, he said to them, “Whoever has two tunics should share with the one who has none, and whoever has food should do likewise.”
12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what should we do [[to be saved]]?”[fn] 13 [And he said [to them],[fn]][fn] “Do nothing more than what is commanded to you [[to do]].”[fn]
14 And the soldiers also asked [him],[fn] saying, “And what should we do [[to be saved]]?”[fn] He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone, nor accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages.”
15 While the people were waiting and all were pondering in their hearts about John, whether he might be the Christ,[fn] 16 [[recognizing their thoughts,]][fn] {John answered},[fn] [saying to them all,][fn] “I [indeed][fn] baptize you with water [[for repentance]];[fn] but one who is more powerful than I is coming, I am not worthy to untie the strap of {his}[fn] sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit[fn] and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand {to clear}[fn] his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into {his}[fn] storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
18 And with many other exhortations, he preached good news to the people.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his {brother's}[fn] wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this also to them all: [and][fn] he locked up John in prison.
21 Now it happened that when all the people were being baptized, and Jesus was baptized and praying, the heavens were opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit[fn] descended in bodily form like a dove {upon}[fn] him, and a voice came from heaven, “{You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased}.”[fn]
23 And Jesus [himself][fn] was about thirty years old when he began, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph[fn]
