AICNT LUKE Chapter 9

9 And having called together {the}[fn] twelve [[apostles]],[fn] he gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases, 2 and he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal [the sick].[fn]

3 And he said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money, nor [even][fn] two tunics to wear. 4 And into whatever house you enter, there stay and from there depart. 5 And whoever does not receive you, when you leave that city, shake off [[even]][fn] the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”

6 And going out, they went {through the villages},[fn] preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

7 But Herod the tetrarch heard about [all][fn] these things [[by him]],[fn] and he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead. 8 But some [[were saying]][fn] that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the ancient prophets had risen.

9 Herod said, “[[For]][fn] John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.

10 And the apostles, having returned, reported to him all that they had done. And taking them with him, he withdrew privately [[into a desert place]][fn] [of a city][fn] [called Bethsaida].[fn] 11 But the crowds, having learned of it, followed him; and welcoming them, he spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed {those in need of healing}.[fn]

12 Now the day began to decline; and the twelve, having approached, said to him, “Dismiss the crowd, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and fields and find lodging [and provisions],[fn] for we are here in a desolate place.”

13 But {he}[fn] said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to {his}[fn] disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of [about][fn] fifty each.” 15 And they did so. [And they made them all sit down.][fn]

16 Having taken the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed [them].[fn] [And he broke them][fn] And he gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied, and the leftover fragments filled twelve baskets.

18 And it happened that [while][fn] he was [praying][fn] alone, {the}[fn] disciples {were with}[fn] him, and {he}[fn] asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 But they answered, saying, “John the Baptist, but others say Elijah; {others yet that a certain prophet of the ancients has risen}.”[fn] 20 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said, “The Christ[fn] [[, Son]][fn] of God.”

21 And he, having rebuked them, commanded them not to tell this to anyone, 22 saying that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and {on the third [day][fn] be raised}.[fn]

23 He said to all, “If anyone wishes to follow me, let him deny himself [and take up his cross][fn] [daily][fn] and follow me. 24 For whoever wishes to save {his}[fn] life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake, this one will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit himself?

26 “For whoever is ashamed of me and those [words][fn] of mine, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and the glory of {the}[fn] Father and the holy angels.

27 “Truly I say to you, [[truly]][fn] there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the {kingdom of God}.”[fn]

28 Now it happened after these words, about eight days [and][fn] taking Peter, John, and James, he went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And it happened while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed and his clothing became dazzling white.

30 And behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah, 31 who, appearing in glory, spoke of his departure,[fn] which he was about to fulfill [in Jerusalem].[fn]

32 But Peter and those with him were weighed down with sleep; having fully awakened, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

33 And it happened as they were parting from him, Peter said [to Jesus],[fn] “Master, it is good for us to be here, and let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he was saying.

34 While he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came from the cloud, [saying],[fn] “This is my {chosen}[fn] Son [[, in whom I am well pleased]];[fn] listen to him.” 36 And [[it happened]][fn] when {the voice}[fn] had occurred, Jesus was found alone. They reported to no one in those days, [nothing][fn] of what they had seen.

37 Now it happened {on the next day},[fn] when they had come down from the mountain, that a large crowd met him.

38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 {And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out and it convulses him},[fn] with foam, and it hardly departs from him crushing[fn] him. 40 I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they were not able.”

41 Jesus [answered and][fn] said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son [here].”[fn]

42 While he was still approaching, the demon tore him and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, {healed the boy},[fn] and gave him back to his father.

43 But all were astonished at the greatness of God. And while everyone was marveling at all the things that {he was doing},[fn] {he}[fn] said to his disciples, 44 “Put these words into your ears: for the Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask [him][fn] about this statement.

46 [But a dispute arose among them as to][fn] {“What might be greater than these?”}[fn] 47 But Jesus, {knowing}[fn] the thoughts of their hearts, took a child and placed it by himself 48 and said [to them],[fn] “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me; and [whoever receives me, receives][fn] the one who sent me; for the one who is least among all of you, this one {is}[fn] great.”

49 But John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.”

50 Jesus said [to him],[fn] “Do not hinder [him].”[fn] For {whoever is not against you, is for you.}[fn]

51 Now it came to pass, when the days were approaching for him to be taken up, that he set his face to go [to Jerusalem].[fn] 52 And he sent messengers ahead [of him.][fn] [And they [went and][fn] entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for him;][fn] 53 but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.

54 Seeing this, {the}[fn] disciples James and John said, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven and consume them [[just as Elijah did]]?”[fn] 55 But he turned and rebuked them. [[And he said, ‘You do not know what manner of spirit you are of;]][fn] [[for the Son of Man came not to destroy people's lives but to save them.]][fn] 56 And they went on to another village.

57 And [[it happened]][fn] as they were going on the road, someone said to him,“[[Lord]][fn] I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have dens and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

59 He said to another, “Follow me.” But he said, “[Lord,][fn] allow me [first][fn] to go and bury my father.”

60 But {he}[fn] said to him, “Let the dead to bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

61 Another also said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first allow me to say goodbye to those in my house.” 62 But Jesus said [to him],[fn] “No one {who puts {the}[fn] hand to the plow and looks back}[fn] is fit for the kingdom of God.”
