15:1-32 Chapter 15 contains three related parables of things lost and found: a sheep (15:1-7), a coin (15:8-10), and a son (15:11-32). The loss of something loved causes deep sorrow, whereas finding it brings great joy. There is great rejoicing in heaven when lost sinners return to their heavenly Father.
In this parable Jesus told about a young man who left his father’s home and wasted the money that his father had given him. Then Jesus told how the young man returned to his father, and how his father welcomed him home. The young man had an older brother who was not happy at all when his father welcomed his younger brother. This story illustrates what God is like. He is ready to forgive anyone who truly turns from his sins and begins to obey him. It also warns people not to be like the older son, who did not want to forgive his brother.

Before you decide on a heading for this section, think about a natural way in your language to describe a child who deliberately left home and foolishly wasted his money. In some languages a word such as “lost” can only be used to describe someone who doesn’t know where he is. If that is true in your language, you will want to use a more appropriate expression for this context.

When he arrived, the older son called a servant and asked him, ‘What is happening?’
So: This verse begins with a Greek conjunction that many English versions translate as “and.” The BSB, along with several other English versions, translates as So because introduces what the older son did as a result of hearing the music and dancing. Translate the connection in a natural way in your language.
he called: The verb that the BSB translates as he called means here that he summoned or called a servant to come to him. The servant was probably outside the house at the time.
one of the servants: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as one of the servants refers to a household servant/slave. It is a different word from the word translated as “servants” in 15:22a. Here it may refer to one of the younger servants.Bock (p. 1316) suggests that the servant was probably a young servant or special servant.
asked what was going on: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as asked what was going on means that the older brother asked the servant to tell him why people were playing music and dancing. If in your language it is more natural to translate this as direct speech, you could say something like:
asked him, “Why are people celebrating like this?”

Jesus uses the word And to introduce the results of what the previous sentence described. When the older son heard these sounds, he wondered what was going on, so he called for a servant and asked him. Alternate translation: [So]
