AICNT LUKE Chapter 13

13 Now there were some present at that time who told [him][fn] about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.

2 And in response [{he}[fn] said to them],[fn] “Do you think that these Galileans were sinners more than all the other Galileans, because they suffered [these things]?[fn] 3 No, I say to you, but unless you repent, you will [all][fn] likewise perish.”

4 “Or those {eighteen}[fn] on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they became debtors above all the other people living in Jerusalem? 5 No, I say to you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

6 And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7 So he said to the vineyard worker, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. [[Bring the axe,]][fn] Cut it down [then],[fn] why should it even waste the ground?’

8 But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, leave it also for this year, until I dig around it and put on manure. 9 And if indeed it bears fruit [in the future],[fn] well; but if not, you shall cut it down.’ ”

10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, [[there was]][fn] a woman having a spirit of infirmity for {eighteen}[fn] years, and she was bent over and not able to straighten up completely. 12 Seeing her, {Jesus}[fn] [called out][fn] and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.” 13 And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God.

14 [But][fn] The ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people [that],[fn] “There are six days [in which][fn] work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”

15 {But}[fn] {the Lord}[fn] answered him and said, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you [on the Sabbath][fn] untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to water it? 16 And this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years, should she not have been set free from this bond on the Sabbath day?”

17 And [as he was saying these things,][fn] [all][fn] those opposing him were put to shame, and all the people rejoiced at [all][fn] the glorious things that were done by him.

18 He said therefore: "What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it?”

19 “It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden, and it grew and became a [large][fn] tree, and the birds of the sky nested in its branches.”

20 [And again he said,][fn] [[“To what is the kingdom of God like?”]][fn] “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was [all][fn] leavened.”[fn]

22 And he went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem.

23 And someone said to him, “Lord, {will those who are saved be few}?”[fn] And {he said to them},[fn] 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow {door}.[fn] For many, [I say to you,][fn] will seek to enter and will not be able.”

25 “From the time master of the house has {risen}[fn] and shut the door, and you begin [to stand outside and][fn] to knock [at the door],[fn] saying, ‘Lord, [[Lord]][fn] open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’

26 “Then you will begin to say, ‘[Lord][fn] We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’

27 “ And he [will say][fn] to you, ‘{I do not know [you][fn]}[fn] [where you are from];[fn] depart from me, all workers of {unrighteousness}.’[fn]

28 “In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out.[fn]

29 “And people will come from east and west, and [from][fn] north and south, and recline at the table in the kingdom of God.

30 “And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

31 {At that very hour}[fn] some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”

32 And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform healings today and tomorrow, and the third [[day]][fn] I finish my course.’ ”

33 “Nevertheless, I must go [on my way today and tomorrow and the day following],[fn] for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.

34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning those sent to her!

“How often would I have gathered your children together, just as a {hen}[fn] [gathers her chicks under her wings],[fn] and you were not willing!

35 “Behold, your house is left to you [[desolate]].[fn]

“[But][fn] I say to you [[that]],[fn] you will not see me until [the time comes when][fn] you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
