11 And it happened that while he was in a certain place praying, when he stopped, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John[fn] also taught his disciples.”
2 And he said to them, “[[When you pray, do not babble as the rest do, for some think that they will be heard because of their many words.]][fn] When you pray, say, ‘[[Our]][fn] Father [[who is in the heavens]],[fn] may your name be sanctified.[fn] Your kingdom come; [[Your will be done, as in heaven, also on earth;]][fn] 3 Give us {each day}[fn] our daily bread; 4 And forgive us our {sins},[fn] {for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us};[fn] and do not lead us into temptation [[but deliver us from evil]].’ ”[fn]
5 And he said [to them][fn], “Which of you will have a friend and will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend [of mine][fn] has come {[to me][fn] [from his journey][fn]},[fn] and I have nothing to set before him’? 7 And he from within will answer, ‘Do not bother me; {the}[fn] door is now shut, and {my}[fn] children are with me in bed. [I cannot get up and give you anything.]’[fn] 8 I say to you, [even if][fn] he will not give him, rising because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give [him][fn] as much as he needs.
9 “I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
11 “{Which of you fathers},[fn] if his son [[asks for bread, he will not give him a stone will he? Or if he]][fn] asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent? Will he? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will {the}[fn] Father [who is][fn] in heaven give the {Holy Spirit}[fn][fn] to those who ask him!”
14 {And he was casting out a demon and it was mute; [and it happened],[fn] when the demon had gone out, the [mute][fn] man spoke, and the crowds were [[all]][fn] amazed.}[fn]
15 But some of them said, “By {Beelzebul},[fn] the prince of demons, he casts out the demons.” [[But he answered and said, “How can Satan cast out Satan?”]][fn]
16 Others, testing him, sought a sign from heaven from him.
17 But knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a house falls upon a house.[fn]
18 “If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say [that][fn] I cast out demons by {Beelzebul}.[fn] 19 If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they will be your judges. 20 But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
21 “When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own courtyard, his possessions are in peace; 22 but when one stronger [than he][fn] attacks [and overcomes][fn] him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and distributes {his}[fn] spoils.
23 “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather [with me][fn] scatters.
24 “[[But]][fn] When the unclean spirit goes out from a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest and not finding it. [Then][fn] It says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came out.’ 25 And having come, it finds it [at rest,][fn] swept and decorated. 26 [Then][fn] It goes and takes with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell [there];[fn] and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
27 And it happened, while he was speaking [these things],[fn] a certain woman from the crowd, raising her voice, said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts at which you nursed.” 28 But he said, “On the contrary,[fn] blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep {it}[fn].”
29 As the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is {an evil generation};[fn] it seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of [[the prophet]][fn] Jonah. 30 [For][fn] just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so [also][fn] will the Son of Man be a sign to this generation. [[And just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale for three days and three nights, so also will the Son of Man be in the earth.]][fn]
31 “The Queen [of the South][fn] will rise up[fn] [at the judgment][fn] with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
32 [“The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.][fn]
33 “[[But]][fn] No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it in a hidden place [nor under a basket],[fn] but on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.
34 “The lamp of {the}[fn] body is your eye.[fn] [[Therefore]][fn] when your eye is clear,[fn] your whole body is full of light; but when it is evil, your body is full of darkness. 35 {Therefore, be careful that the light within you is not darkness}.[fn] 36 [If your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be completely illuminated, as when a lamp with its bright shining gives you light.]”[fn]
37 [Now as he spoke,][fn] A [[certain]][fn] Pharisee asked him to dine with him; so he went in and reclined. 38 But the Pharisee, {seeing this, marveled that he had not first washed}[fn] before the meal.
39 The Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees [[hypocrites]][fn] clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but the inside of you is full of greed and wickedness. 40 Fools, did not the one who made the outside also make the inside? 41 But give as charity what is inside, and behold {everything is}[fn] clean for you.
42 “But woe to you Pharisees; [for][fn] you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass by justice and {the love of God}.[fn] [[But][fn] these things you ought to have done without neglecting the others.][fn]
43 “Woe to you Pharisees, for you love the best seats in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces. [[And the places of honor at banquets.]][fn]
44 “Woe to you [[Scribes and Pharisees.]][fn] [[Hypocrites!]][fn] For you are [as][fn] unmarked graves, and the men walking above do not know.”
45 [fn]But one of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, by saying these things you also insult us.”
46 And he said, “Woe to you lawyers [as well],[fn] for you load men with [[heavy]] burdens hard to bear, and you [yourselves][fn] do not touch [it][fn] [the burdens][fn] with one of your fingers.
47 “Woe to you, for you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 Therefore, you are witnesses and you approve of the deeds of your fathers, for they indeed killed them, but you build [[their tombs]].[fn] 49 Therefore, for this reason [the Wisdom of God said,][fn] ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and {persecute},’[fn] 50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, 51 from the blood of Abel [[the righteous]][fn] to the blood of Zechariah, [[son of Barachiah,]][fn] {who perished}[fn] between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I say to you, it will be required of this generation.
52 “Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter.”
53 {And as he went away from there},[fn] {the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 [lying in wait][fn] [for him,][fn] [[seeking]][fn] to catch something from his mouth}[fn] [[that they might accuse him]].[fn]
