AICNT LUKE Chapter 21

LUKE 21 ©

21Looking up, {he}[fn] saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury. 2And he saw a poor widow putting [there][fn] two {small copper coins.}[fn]

3And he said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; 4for all these people have put in their gifts [[of God]][fn] out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all the living that she had.”

5Some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts; he said, 6“These things which you see, days will come in which not a stone will be left upon a stone [[in the wall]][fn] [[here]][fn] that will not be torn down.”

7And {they}[fn] asked him, saying “Teacher, when [then][fn] will these things be, and what will be the sign {when these things are about to happen}?”[fn]

8But he said, “Watch that you are not deceived; for many will come in my name, saying [[that]],[fn] ‘I am [he],’[fn] and, [‘The time is near.’][fn] [[Therefore]][fn] do not follow them.

9“But when you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be {alarmed};[fn] for these things must happen first, but the end will not come immediately.”

10[Then he said to them,][fn] “[[For]][fn] Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

11“There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be terrifying events and great signs from heaven.

12“But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.

13“[[But]][fn] This will give you an opportunity to testify. 14[Therefore,][fn] {Place}[fn] in your hearts not to premeditate a defense.

15“For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries will not be able to resist [or contradict].[fn]

16“You will be betrayed [even][fn] by {parents and brothers and relatives and friends};[fn] and they will put some of you to death.

17“And you will be hated by all because of my name.

18“But not a hair of your head will perish.

19“In your endurance, acquire your souls.[fn]

20“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.

21“Then those in Judea should flee to the mountains, and those inside the city should leave it, and those out in the surrounding areas should not enter it;

22“For these are days of vengeance, as a fulfillment of all that is written.

23“Woe to those who are pregnant and [to those][fn] who are nursing infants in those days! [For][fn] [[In those days]][fn] There will there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people;

24“They will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken away as captives among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles, until the times [of the Gentiles][fn] are fulfilled.

25“There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26men fainting from fear and the expectation of what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

27“And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with great power and glory.[fn]

28“But when these things begin to take place, [stand up and][fn] lift up your heads, because [your] redemption is drawing near.”

29And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; 30when they {put forth leaves},[fn] you [see for yourselves and][fn] know [that][fn] summer already is near. 31{In this way also you},[fn] when you see these things [happening],[fn] know that the kingdom of God is near.

32“Truly I say to you this generation will not pass away until all [[these]][fn] things take place. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

34“[But][fn] Be on guard for yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day come upon you suddenly 35{like a trap};[fn] for it will come upon [all][fn] those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.

36“{But}[fn] be alert at all times, praying that you may {have strength}[fn] to escape all [these things][fn] that are about to happen and {to stand}[fn] before the Son of Man.”

37He was teaching in the temple during the day, [and during the nights][fn] he would [go out and][fn] {lodge}[fn] on the mountain {called}[fn] Olives. 38And all the people would rise up early to listen to him in the temple.[fn]
