5 Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around him and to hear the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[fn] 2 and he saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen [had gotten out of them and][fn] were {washing}[fn] their nets. 3 Stepping into {one of the boats},[fn] which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And sitting down in the boat, he taught the crowds.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered and said [[to him]],[fn] “{Master},[fn] we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but at your word I will {let down the {nets}[fn]}.”[fn] 6 {When they had done this},[fn] they enclosed a great quantity of fish, {but their nets were torn apart};[fn] 7 so they signaled to their partners [[, those]][fn] in the other boat to come and help them. And they [came and][fn] filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.
8 But when Simon [Peter][fn] saw this, he fell down at {Jesus' knees},[fn] saying, “Go away from me, for I am a sinful man [, Lord]!”[fn] 9 For amazement had seized him [and all those with him][fn] because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 {and likewise also James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men}.”[fn]
11 {When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything}[fn] and followed him.
12 {But}[fn] it happened, while he was in one of the cities, behold, a man full of leprosy; [and when he saw Jesus,][fn] he fell on his face [and he pleaded with him],[fn] saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 13 And stretching out his hand, he touched him, saying, “I am willing, be cleansed;” and immediately {the leprosy left him}.[fn] 14 And he commanded [him][fn] to tell no one, but “Go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” [[But he went out and began to proclaim and spread the word, so that he could no longer openly enter a city, but was out in deserted places. And they came to him, and he returned to Capernaum.]][fn]
15 But the word about him spread even more, and many crowds gathered to hear and to be healed [[by him]][fn] of their infirmities. 16 But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.
17 And it happened {on one of the days, and[fn] he was teaching, and there were [sitting][fn] Pharisees and teachers of the law who}[fn] had come from every village of Galilee and Judea [and Jerusalem][fn] {; and the power of the Lord was present for him to heal}.[fn]
18 And behold, men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay [him][fn] before him. 19 And not finding a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and {let him down with the {bed}[fn] through the tiles}[fn] [into the middle][fn] in front of {Jesus}.[fn] 20 {And seeing {their}[fn] faith, he said [[to him]],[fn] “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”}[fn]
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason [[in their hearts]],[fn] saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins {but God alone}?”[fn]
22 But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, [answered and][fn] said to them, “Why do you ponder [[evil]][fn] in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven [you],[fn]’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins;” he said to the paralyzed man, “I say to you, rise, [take up your mat,][fn] and go to your house.”
25 And immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and went to his house, glorifying God. 26 [And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God.][fn] And they were filled with fear, saying [that],[fn] “We have seen extraordinary things today.”
27 [[And coming again by the sea, the crowd following him, he taught.]][fn] {And after this, he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him},[fn] “Follow me.” 28 And leaving [everything],[fn] he rose and followed him.
29 And Levi made a [great][fn] feast for him in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors [and others][fn] who were reclining [with them].[fn] 30 And {the Pharisees and their scribes}[fn] grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why {do you}[fn] eat and drink with tax collectors [and sinners]?”[fn]
31 And {Jesus}[fn] answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
33 And they said to him, “[[Why do]][fn] the disciples of John [[and the disciples of the Pharisees]][fn] {often fast and offer prayers, likewise also the Pharisees},[fn] but {yours eat and drink}.”[fn]
34 {Jesus}[fn] said to them, “Can [you make][fn] the sons of the bridechamber fast {while the bridegroom is}[fn] [with them].[fn] 35 But days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will [fast][fn] in those days.”
36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment [and sews it][fn] on an old one; otherwise, the new will tear and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts [new][fn] wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the new wine will burst the [[old]][fn] wineskins and it will be spilled, and the wineskins will be destroyed. 38 But [new][fn] wine must be put into fresh wineskins [[and both are preserved]].[fn] 39 [[And][fn] No one after drinking old wine [[immediately]][fn] desires new; for he says, ‘The old is {good}.’[fn]]”[fn]
