ULT then you shall take an awl and put it in his ear and to a door, and he shall be your slave forever. And also you shall do thus to your female servant.

The implication is that the owner must pierce the slave’s earlobe. The slave would stand against a door, and the owner would poke the awl through the ear and into the door. The door helped the awl pierce all the way through the earlobe. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers.
