TSNTyndale Study Notes:

11:1–15:33 These chapters detail the regulations pertaining to purity. The mixing of types of animals was forbidden (see Deut 22:9-11) because it represented a violation of the normal created order. “Abnormal” creatures—such as fish without fins and scales, carnivores, crawling insects, and animals without split hooves—cross boundaries between “normal” types and were unfit for food or offerings (see also Deut 14:1-21). The dietary laws were meant to distinguish Israel as a holy people from the surrounding nations (Lev 11:44-45).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

sons_of Yisrael

See how you translated this way of referring to the people of Israel in 1:2.

Note 2 topic: writing-quotations

לֵאמֹ֑ר

to=say

The word saying introduces a direct quotation. In your translation, consider ways in which you might introduce this quotation naturally in your language.

Note 3 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

זֹ֤את הַֽחַיָּה֙

this(f) the,creatures

In this verse, the word living thing is singular in form, but it refers to all the following animals, birds, fish, lizards, and insects as a group. If it would be helpful in your language, you could say this plainly. Alternate translation: “These are the creatures”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

הַֽחַיָּה֙

the,creatures

The expression the living thing does not refer to a specific animal. It describes any animal, bird, fish, lizard, or insect that an Israelite might encounter in their daily life. Express this in the way that would be most natural in your language. Alternate translation: “is the type of creature that you might encounter”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

This expression refers to all land-dwelling animals, whether domesticated or otherwise. Express this in the way that would be most natural in your language. See how you translated the word livestock in 1:2.

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

מִכָּל־הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

The expression the livestock does not refer to a specific group of animals. It describes any four-footed animal that an Israelite might own or encounter in their daily life. Express this in the way that would be most natural in your language. Alternate translation: “from any quadruped that is on the earth”
