TSNTyndale Study Notes:

11:1–15:33 These chapters detail the regulations pertaining to purity. The mixing of types of animals was forbidden (see Deut 22:9-11) because it represented a violation of the normal created order. “Abnormal” creatures—such as fish without fins and scales, carnivores, crawling insects, and animals without split hooves—cross boundaries between “normal” types and were unfit for food or offerings (see also Deut 14:1-21). The dietary laws were meant to distinguish Israel as a holy people from the surrounding nations (Lev 11:44-45).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

זֹ֣את תּוֹרַ֤ת הַבְּהֵמָה֙ וְהָע֔וֹף

this(f) law the=cattle/livestock and=the=bird

This expression uses the possessive form to describe the instruction that is characterized by its referring to the wide variety of animals, fish, and living things listed in this verse. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a generic expression. Alternate translation: “This is the instruction that has to do with the livestock and the bird” or “This is the instruction that pertains to the livestock and the bird”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

הַבְּהֵמָה֙ וְהָע֔וֹף

the=cattle/livestock and=the=bird

The expressions the livestock and the bird do not refer to specific groups of animals. Rather, they describe any four-footed animal or any bird that an Israelite might own or encounter in their daily life. Express this in the way that would be most natural in your language. Alternate translation: ”quadrupeds and birds”

Note 3 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

See how you translated this collective noun in 11:13.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְכֹל֙ נֶ֣פֶשׁ הַֽחַיָּ֔ה הָרֹמֶ֖שֶׂת בַּמָּ֑יִם

and=all/each/any/every creature the,living the=creeping in/on/at/with,water

This expression likely refers to small fish or water-dwelling creatures that swarm in water. This may include, for example, schools of small fish and creatures like crabs and starfish. If this meaning would not be clear in your language, consider using a more natural expression. Alternate translation: “and every living thing that swarms in large numbers in the water”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

וְכֹל֙ נֶ֣פֶשׁ הַֽחַיָּ֔ה

and=all/each/any/every creature the,living

The expression life of the living thing uses the possessive form to describe an animal that is a living, breathing, creature. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, consider using a generic expression. Alternate translation: “and every living creature”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וּלְכָל־נֶ֖פֶשׁ הַשֹּׁרֶ֥צֶת עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

and=to/for=all creature the,swarms on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in (Some words not found in UHB: this(f) law the=cattle/livestock and=the=bird and=all/each/any/every creature the,living the=creeping in/on/at/with,water and=to/for=all creature the,swarms on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the=earth/land )

Like the previous expression that referred to living creatures in the water, this expression refers to anything living that crawls about on dry land. If this meaning would not be clear in your language, consider using a more natural expression. Alternate translation: “and of every living creature that crawls about on the ground”
