TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:1-49 This section expands the discussion begun in 3:21-37 on the duties of the three clans of Levites. The Levites—on the march and encamped—carried and cared for the Tabernacle and were always surrounded by the other tribes so that they and their precious cargo would be safe (2:17). The sacred things associated with God were placed in the middle of the tribes, and the role of the priests and their Levitical assistants was to keep them holy by keeping them separate.
• God, in his holiness, is worthy of attention to the details of his will. His Tabernacle and its furnishings were sacred, and the tribe of Levi was responsible to maintain the distinction between holy and common, between clean and unclean. This explains why so much information is provided about the duties of the three clans of Levites.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

בֶּ֚גֶד תּוֹלַ֣עַת שָׁנִ֔י

cloth scarlet_of scarlet

Here Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe a cloth that was made scarlet in color by using a dye produced from worms. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “a cloth that has been dyed scarlet”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / pronouns

אֹת֔וֹ

DOM=him/it

Here, it refers to a cloth of the worms of scarlet. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “that cloth”

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

בְּמִכְסֵ֖ה ע֣וֹר תָּ֑חַשׁ

in/on/at/with,covering skin/leather fine

See how you translated the same phrase in 4:6.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְשָׂמ֖וּ אֶת־בַּדָּֽיו

and,insert DOM poles,its

These poles were inserted into rings on the sides of the table so that the poles could be used to carry it, as explained in Exodus 25:2628. See how you translated the similar use of this clause in 4:6.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / pronouns

בַּדָּֽיו

poles,its

Here, its refers to the table mentioned in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “that table”
