UST You Pharisees and teachers of the Jewish law say that you obey God, but you really do not! You travel to many places to convert even one person to the Jewish religion. However, once you have done that, you cause that person to deserve to end up in hell as much as you do. How terrible it will be for you!

AICNT “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel over sea and land to make one proselyte, and when it happens, you make it a son of Gehenna[fn] twice as much as yourselves.
23:15, Gehenna: Often translated hell, Gehenna is a term derived from a place called the Valley of Hinnom, located near Jerusalem. In the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), this valley was associated with practices of child sacrifice to foreign gods, notably the Canaanite deity Moloch. Because of these associations, the Valley of Hinnom was reviled and became a symbol of divine judgment and destruction.
OEB Alas for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You scour land and sea to make a single convert, and, when they are gained, you make them twice as deserving of Gehenna as you are yourselves.

T4T “You are hypocrites, you men who teach the Jewish laws and you Pharisees! Your punishment will be terrible, because you exert yourselves very much to get even one person to believe what you teach. For instance, you travel across seas and lands to distant places in order to do that. And as a result, when one person believes what you teach, you make that person much more deserving to go to hell than you yourselves deserve to.”

23:15 A convert (proselyte) made a full conversion to Judaism, performing such observances as baptism, sacrifice, and circumcision (see Acts 13:43). A convert was thus distinct from a “God-fearer,” who adopted certain Jewish beliefs, most notably monotheism, without fully converting to Judaism (see Luke 7:4-5; Acts 10:2). It is likely that to make one convert means to persuade God-fearers to become full converts to Judaism by undergoing circumcision (cp. Gal 2:3, 14; 5:2-12; 6:12-13).
• of hell: Greek of Gehenna; see study note on 5:29.

οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι, ὑποκριταί! ὅτι περιάγετε τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηρὰν ποιῆσαι ἕνα προσήλυτον, καὶ ὅταν γένηται, ποιεῖτε αὐτὸν υἱὸν Γεέννης διπλότερον ὑμῶν
woe ˱to˲_you_all scribes and Pharisees hypocrites because ˱you_all˲_˓are˒_going_around the sea and the dry_‹land› ˓to˒_make one convert and whenever ˱he˲_˓may˒_become ˱you_all˲_˓are˒_making him ˓a˒_son ˱of˲_Gehenna twice_more_‹than› you_all
If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these sentences, since the second sentence gives the reason for the result that the first sentence describes. Alternate translation: [You, scribes and Pharisees, go around the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as you. So woe to you, hypocrites!]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / merism
τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηρὰν
the sea and the dry_‹land›
Jesus is referring to all of the earth by naming its two main components. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the entire earth]
Note 3 topic: translate-unknown
ἕνα προσήλυτον
one convert
A proselyte is a non-Jewish person who converts to Judaism. If your readers would not be familiar with the meaning of this term, you could refer to a similar phenomenon in your area, or you could use a more general term. Alternate translation: [one convert to Judaism]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations
γένηται & αὐτὸν υἱὸν
˱he˲_˓may˒_become & him ˓a˒_son
Although the terms he, him, and son are masculine, Jesus is using the words in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that makes this clear. Alternate translation: [a person becomes one … him or her … a child]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
υἱὸν Γεέννης διπλότερον ὑμῶν
˓a˒_son ˱of˲_Gehenna twice_more_‹than› you_all
Jesus uses the phrase twice as much to indicate that the person is even more a son of Gehenna than the scribes and Pharisees. He does not mean that the person is exactly twice a son of Gehenna. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [even more a son of Gehenna than you are]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
υἱὸν Γεέννης
˓a˒_son ˱of˲_Gehenna
The expression a son of Gehenna refers to a person who will end up in Gehenna. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [a person who will end up in Gehenna] or [a person who belongs in Gehenna]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
Γεέννης
˱of˲_Gehenna
Jesus uses the name Gehenna to refer to hell. The valley named Gehenna was outside the city of Jerusalem and was a place where people threw out and burned garbage. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a simile or state the meaning plainly. See how you expressed the idea in [18:9](../18/09.md). Alternate translation: [of a place like the valley of Gehenna] or [of hell, which is like Gehenna valley,]
