TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:1-15 The second plague was the plague of frogs (8:2). The Egyptians gave special reverence to amphibians because of their ability to live in two different worlds; Egyptians were deeply concerned with survival in the next world, after death. God showed that frogs have no special hold on life. This plague is sometimes said to have been a natural result of whatever happened to make the Nile River uninhabitable. However, the extent of the plague was more than a natural result.

וְהַכְבֵּד֙ אֶת־לִבּ֔וֹ

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said the=magicians/soothsayers to/towards Farˊoh finger ʼₑlhīmv who/which and,hardened heart Farˊoh's and=not listen to,them just=as he/it_had_said YHWH )

Pharaoh’s stubborn attitude is spoken of as if he made his own heart heavy. If the heart is not the body part your culture uses to refer to a person’s will, consider using whichever organ your culture would use for this image. See how you translated this in Exodus 7:14, but note there that the state of Pharaoh’s heart is reported, whereas here Pharaoh makes his own heart heavy. Alternate translation: “and Pharaoh determined to be defiant”

כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָֽה

Alternate translation: “just as Yahweh had said Pharaoh would do”
