TSNTyndale Study Notes:

9:3 At the back of the first room of the Tabernacle was a curtain that separated the first room from the second room called the Most Holy Place (Exod 26:31-33). This curtain was a sacred barrier: Only the high priest could go behind it into the Most Holy Place, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Heb 9:7; see Exod 30:6, 10; Lev 16:2-34; 23:27-32).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

μετὰ & τὸ δεύτερον καταπέτασμα σκηνὴ

after & the second curtain_‹was› /a/_tabernacle

The author has not mentioned a first curtain, but he implies that the first curtain was at the entrance to the first part of the tabernacle. The second curtain separated the outer and inner sections of the tabernacle. The tent here must therefore be the second or inner part of the tabernacle, since it is behind the second curtain. If it would be helpful in your language, you could clarify that this is the curtain in front of the second or inner tent. Alternate translation: “behind a curtain was the second tent” or “behind the curtain was the inner part of the tent”

Note 2 topic: translate-ordinal

δεύτερον καταπέτασμα

second curtain_‹was›

If your language does not use ordinal numbers, you can use a cardinal number here. Alternate translation: “curtain two”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἡ λεγομένη

¬which /being/_called

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. The author uses the passive form here to focus on what is called rather than on the person doing the calling. If you must state who did the action, you could use an indefinite subject. Alternate translation: “which people called” or “which they named”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

Ἅγια Ἁγίων

/the/_Holy ˱of˲_Holies

Here the author uses another name for the inner part of the tent. He does not use this exact name to refer to the second part of the tent again, and it is likely that here he uses the name that he found in his version of the Old Testament. Make sure that your readers know that the author is quoting a name that he knew about. Alternate translation: “by the name ‘Most Holy Room’”
