TSNTyndale Study Notes:

27:25 all the people (see 21:43): This does not mean every living Jew. Instead, those urging Jesus’ condemnation are representative of all of unbelieving Israel, whose actions bring consequences for the nation as a whole (e.g., the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70).
• We will take responsibility for his death—we and our children (see 23:35; 2 Sam 1:16; 14:9; Jer 51:35; Acts 5:28; 18:6; 20:26): Christians have at times misunderstood and misused this verse in persecution of Jews, but it is not an indictment against Jews in general.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ἡμῶν

the blood ˱of˲_him_‹is› on us and on the children ˱of˲_us

Here, clause His blood be on us and on our children means that the crowd was accepting the responsibility for Jesus’ blood. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable clause or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “The responsibility for his blood will be on us and on our children”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ

the blood ˱of˲_him_‹is›

Here, blood refers to the death of a person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable phrase or state the meaning plainly. See how you expressed the idea in 27:4. Alternate translation: “His death”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἡμᾶς & ἡμῶν

us & ˱of˲_us

Here, us and our refer to the people who were there, so us and our are exclusive. Your language may require you to mark these forms.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τὰ τέκνα

the children

Here, the word children could refer: (1) just to the people’s children. Alternate translation: “sons and daughters” (2) to the people’s offspring or descendants in general. Alternate translation: “offspring” or “descendants”
