21And_sent Yəshaˊyāh/(Isaiah) the_son of_Amoz to Ḩizqiyyāh to_say thus he_says YHWH the_god of_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) that you_have_prayed to_me concerning Sennacherib the_king of_Assyria.
22This the_word which he_has_spoken YHWH on/upon/above_him/it she_has_despised to/for_yourself(m) she_has_mocked to/for_yourself(m) the_virgin of_the_daughter of_Tsiyyōn/(Zion) behind_you a_head she_has_shaken the_daughter of_Yərūshālayim/(Jerusalem).
23DOM whom have_you_taunted and_blasphemed and_against whom have_you_raised a_voice and_lifted height eyes_your against the_holy_[one] of_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel).
24In/on/at/with_hand your_servants you_have_taunted my_master and_she/it_said in/on/at/with_many chariots_my I I_have_gone_up [the]_height[s] of_mountains the_remotest_parts of_Ləⱱānōn and_cut_down the_height cedars_its the_choicest cypresses_its and_came the_height height_its the_forest densest_its.

26Am_not have_you_heard at_from_long_time_ago DOM_it I_appointed from_days of_antiquity and_planned_it now brought_topass_it and_is to_crushed heaps ruined cities fortified.
27And_inhabitants_their [were]_short of_hand they_were_dismayed and_ashamed they_were vegetation of_[the]_field and_tender of_fresh_grass grass of_roofs and_blighted to_(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before standing_grain.
28And_sitting_down_your and_going_out_your and_coming_in_your I_know and_DOM raging_your against_me.
29Because raging_you to_me and_arrogance_your it_has_come_up in/on/at/with_ears_my and_put hook_my in/on/at/with_nose_your and_bit_my in/on/at/with_mouth_your and_turn_back_you in/on/at/with_way which you_came in/on/at/with_her.
30And_this for_you the_sign you_will_eat the_year self-sown_grain and_in/on/at/with_year the_second(fs) self-seeded_plant[s] and_in/on/at/with_year the_third sow and_reap and_plant vineyards and_eat[fn] fruit_their.
31And_again the_escaped_remnant of_the_house of_Yəhūdāh/(Judah) the_surviving a_root at_downward and_bear fruit at_above.
32If/because from_Yərūshālayim/(Jerusalem) it_will_go_out a_remnant and_survivors from_hill of_Tsiyyōn/(Zion) the_zeal of_YHWH of_hosts it_will_accomplish this.
33for_so/thus/hence thus he_says YHWH concerning the_king of_Assyria not he_will_come into the_city the_this and_not he_will_shoot there an_arrow and_not come_before_it a_shield and_not he_will_pour_out against_it[fn] a_mound.
34In/on/at/with_way which he_came in/on/at/with_her he_will_return and_near/to the_city the_this not he_will_come the_utterance of_YHWH.
35And_defend (on) the_city the_this to_save_it for_sake_my and_for_the_sake_of Dāvid servant_my.
36and_he/it_went_out the_angel of_YHWH and_struck_down in/on/at/with_camp of_Assyria one_hundred and_eighty and_five thousand and_got_up in/on/at/with_morning and_see/lo/see all_these [were]_corpses dead.
37And_left and_he/it_went and_returned Sennacherib the_king of_Assyria and_he/it_sat_down//remained//lived in/on/at/with_Nīnəvēh.

Sennacherib Attacks Judah

Isaiah 36-37; 2 Kings 18-19; 2 Chronicles 32

The harrowing experience of the attack on Judah by King Sennacherib of Assyria during Hezekiah’s reign is recorded by three different writers of Scripture and even by Sennacherib himself. Many scholars also suspect that this event formed the basis for Herodotus’s story regarding an army of mice eating the bow strings of the Assyrian army during their campaign against the Egyptians (Histories, 2.141). The origins of this event stretch back into the reign of Hezekiah’s father Ahaz, who enticed the Assyrians to attack Israel and Aram in exchange for making Judah a vassal of Assyria (2 Kings 16-17; 2 Chronicles 28; Isaiah 7-8; also see “The Final Days of the Northern Kingdom of Israel” map). Judah continued to be a vassal of Assyria through the early part of Hezekiah’s reign, but Hezekiah also quietly made extensive preparations to throw off the yoke of Assyria one day (2 Kings 18:1-12; 1 Chronicles 4:39-43; 2 Chronicles 29-31; also see “Hezekiah Strengthens Judah” map). Hezekiah also appears to have been hoping for support from Babylon and Egypt regarding his efforts to revolt against Assyria’s rule, but the prophet Isaiah warned Judah against placing their hopes in these foreign powers (Isaiah 30:1-5; 31:1-3; 39:1-8; 40:10-15; 2 Kings 20:12-19). After a few years spent quashing rebellion among the Babylonians, the Kassites, and the Medes in the east, Sennacherib turned his sights westward and began a campaign to subdue the various vassal nations that were refusing to submit to Assyria’s rule any longer. He first reconquered the Phoenician cities of Sidon and Tyre and then moved south to Philistia. He subdued Joppa, Beth-dagon, Bene-berak, and Azor and then moved to capture the cities of the Shephelah, which guarded the entrances to the valleys leading into the central hill country of Judah. While Sennacherib was attacking Lachish he sent his officers to demand Hezekiah’s surrender. This may be the Assyrian advance upon Jerusalem from the north described in Isaiah 10:28-32, but this is not certain (see “Assyria Advances on Jerusalem” map). Hezekiah sent officers back to Sennacherib with gold and silver taken from Temple and the royal treasury, but he would not surrender. The officers then traveled to Libnah to meet with Sennacherib, for he gone to fight there by that time. In the meantime King Tirhakah of Cush, who was ruling over Egypt at this time, came to attack Sennacherib, so Sennacherib sent his officials back to Hezekiah with a message that Jerusalem would be taken if he resisted. Hezekiah laid the letter from the officials before the Lord and prayed, and the Lord sent word through the prophet Isaiah that Jerusalem would not be taken. Then that very night the angel of the Lord killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers (probably those with Sennacherib fighting the Egyptians), and Sennacherib went back to Assyria. There while he was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch, Sennacherib’s sons killed him and fled to Ararat (see “Ararat” map).
