TSNTyndale Study Notes:

38:1-6 Gog would lead a coalition of seven nations from the four corners of the world. The numbers seven and four both symbolize completeness; here, they indicate an invincible alliance coming from far and near in all directions, from which there would be no escape. Magog, Meshech and Tubal, Gomer, and Beth-togarmah were located in the north, in Anatolia and the region beyond the Black Sea. Persia was to the east, Ethiopia to the south, and Libya to the west.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-symaction

(Occurrence 0) set your face toward Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince … Tubal

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind set face,your to/towards Gōg earth/land the,Magog prince head Meshech and=Tubal and,prophesy on/upon/above=him/it )

This is a command to stare at Gog and Magog as a symbol of punishing the people there. See how you translated a similar phrase in Ezekiel 4:3. Alternate translation: “Stare at the land of Magog and at Gog, the chief prince … Tubal” or “Stare at Gog, the chief prince … Tubal, and at the land of Magog so that they will be harmed”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) set your face

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind set face,your to/towards Gōg earth/land the,Magog prince head Meshech and=Tubal and,prophesy on/upon/above=him/it )

Here “face” is a metonym for attention or gaze, and “set your face” represents staring. Alternate translation: “stare”

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind set face,your to/towards Gōg earth/land the,Magog prince head Meshech and=Tubal and,prophesy on/upon/above=him/it )

It is implied that Magog is the land over which Gog rules. Alternate translation: “Gog who rules over the land of Magog”

This is the name of a leader or king who ruled in the land of Magog.

(Occurrence 0) Magog

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind set face,your to/towards Gōg earth/land the,Magog prince head Meshech and=Tubal and,prophesy on/upon/above=him/it )

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind set face,your to/towards Gōg earth/land the,Magog prince head Meshech and=Tubal and,prophesy on/upon/above=him/it )

This expression occurs twice in these verses. Some modern versions, however, interpret the Hebrew expression as “the chief of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.” This is another title for Gog. Alternate translation: “who is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal”

(Occurrence 0) Meshech … Tubal

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind set face,your to/towards Gōg earth/land the,Magog prince head Meshech and=Tubal and,prophesy on/upon/above=him/it )

See how you translated these names in Ezekiel 32:26.
