ULT So the people said, “Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, since the law will never perish from the priests, or advice from the wise men, or words from the prophets. Come, let us attack him with our words and no longer pay attention to anything he proclaims.”

UST Then the people said, “Come, we should plan to attack Jeremiah. We have many priests who teach us God’s laws, wise men who give us good advice, and prophets who tell us what will happen. We do not need Jeremiah! So we should slander him and not pay attention to anything that he says.”

BSB § Then some said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah, for the law will never be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the wise, nor an oracle to the prophet. Come, let us denounce him and pay no heed to any of his words.”

OEB Then said they, "Come, let us forge
⇔ A plot against Jeremiah.
⇔ For the priests will not lack for instruction to offer,
⇔ Nor the wise men for counsel to render,
⇔ Nor the prophet for words to declare.
⇔ Come, with the tongue let us smite him,
⇔ Let us watch him in all that he says."

WEB Then they said, “Come! Let’s devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won’t perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let’s strike him with the tongue, and let’s not give heed to any of his words.”

NET Then some people said, “Come on! Let us consider how to deal with Jeremiah! There will still be priests to instruct us, wise men to give us advice, and prophets to declare God’s word. Come on! Let’s bring charges against him and get rid of him! Then we will not need to pay attention to anything he says.”

LSV And they say, “Come,
And we devise schemes against Jeremiah,
For law does not perish from the priest,
Nor counsel from the wise,
Nor the word from the prophet,
Come, and we strike him with the tongue,
And we do not attend to any of his words.”

FBV Some people decided, “We need a plan to deal with Jeremiah. There'll still be priests to explain the law, there'll still be wise people to give advice, and there'll still be prophets to give prophecies. Let's organize a smear campaign[fn] against him so we don't have to listen to a word he says.”

18:18 “Organize a smear campaign”: literally, “strike him with the tongue.”

T4T Then some of the people said, “Come, let’s plan to attack Jeremiah. We have many priests who teach us God’s laws, and wise men who give us good advice, and prophets who tell us what will happen. We do not need Jeremiah! So, let’s slander him and not pay attention to anything that he says.”

LEB Then they said, “Come and let us plan plans against Jeremiah, for instruction will not be lost from the priest, nor advice from the wise man, nor the word from the prophet. Come and let us bring charges against him,[fn] and let us not listen attentively to any of his words.”

?:? Literally “let us strike him with the tongue”

BBE Then they said, Come, let us make a design against Jeremiah; for teaching will never be cut off from the priest, or wisdom from the wise, or the word from the prophet. Come, let us make use of his words for an attack on him, and let us give attention with care to what he says.
