This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public.

26:1The second census

26After the incident of the plague, Yahweh told Mosheh and Aharon’s son Eleazar the priest,[ref] 2Count all the Israeli people again listing all those by their clans who’re twenty and over, and capable of going out to battle for Yisrael.” 3So there in the Moav plains, across the Yarden river opposite Yeriho (Jericho), Mosheh and the priest Eleazar gave these instructions to the people, 4Yahweh has ordered us to list the names of the men who came out from Egypt who’re twenty years old or older.

26:5Reuven’s descendants

5Reuven was Yisrael’s eldest son, and his descendants came via his sons Hanok, Pallu, 6Hetsron, and Karmi. 7Those clans added up to 43,730 men. 8Pallu’s son was Eliav, 9and Eliav’s son were Nemuel, Datan, and Aviram. (That was the Datan and Aviram who were the leaders that rebelled[ref] against Mosheh and Aharon when they joined Korah’s rebellion against Yahweh. 10Then the earth split open and swallowed them and Korah. Yahweh had also sent a fire that consumed 250 men, and they became a warning sign. 11However, Korah’s descendants hadn’t died then.)

26:12Shimeon’s descendants

12Shimeon’s descendants came via his sons Nemuel, Yamin, Yakin, 13Zerah, and Shaul. 14Those clans added up to 22,200 men.

26:15Gad’s descendants

15Gad’s descendants came via his sons Tsefon, Haggit, Shuni, 16Ozni, Eir, 17Arod, and Areli. 18Those clans added up to 40,500 men.

26:19Yehudah’s descendants

19Yehudah (Judah) had two sons Er and Onan who died childless in Kenaan. 20His descendants came via his other sons Shelah, Perets, and Zerah. 21Perets’s descendants came via his sons Hetsron and Hamul. 22Those clans added up to 76,500 men.

26:23Yissakar’s descendants

23Yissakar’s (Issachar’s) descendants came via his sons Tola, Puah, 24Yashuv, and Shimron. 25Those clans added up to 64,300 men.

26:26Zevulun’s descendants

26Zevulun’s descendants came via his sons Sered, Eylon, and Yahle’el. 27Those clans added up to 60,500 men.

26:28Menashsheh’s descendants

28Yosef’s (Joseph’s) descendants came via his sons Menashsheh (Manasseh) and Efrayim. 29Menashsheh’s descendants came from his son Makir and then his son Gilead. 30Gilead’s descendants came via his sons Iezer, Helek, 31Asriel, Shekem, 32Shemida, and Hefer. 33Hefer’s son Tselofehad had no sons—only daughters named Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah, and Tirtsah. 34Those clans added up to 52,700 men.

26:35Efrayim’s descendants

35Efrayim’s descendants came via his sons Shutelah, Beker, and Tahan, 36Shutelah’s descendants came via his son Eran. 37Those clans added up to 32,500 men. These last two totals were all Yosef’s (Joseph’s) descendants.

26:38Benyamin’s descendants

38Benyamin’s descendants came via his sons Bela, Ashbel, Ahiram, 39Shefufam, and Hufam. 40Bela’s descendants came via his sons Ard and Naaman. 41Those clans added up to 45,600 men.

26:42Dan’s descendants

42Dan’s descendants came via his son Shuham. 43That clan had 64,400 men.

26:44Asher’s descendants

44Asher’s descendants came via his sons Yimnah, Yishvi, and Beriah. 45Beriah’s descendants came via his sons Hever and Malkiel. 46Asher’s daughter was named Serah. 47Those clans added up to 53,400 men.

26:48Naftali’s descendants

48Naftali’s descendants came via his sons Yahtse’el, Guni, 49Yetser, and Shillem. 50Those clans added up to 45,400 men.

26:51The census total and the division of land

51The total of all those tribes counted came to 601,730 men.[fn]

52Then Yahweh told Mosheh,[ref] 53“The land should be allocated to those clans according to the number of their names, to become their inheritance. 54Those with larger numbers should receive more, and the smaller groups receive less, i.e., each inheritance depends on the number of family members. 55You must throw lots to determine which clan gets which piece of land. The lands of the clans must be within their tribal lands. 56Then the size of the area that will become their inheritance must be apportioned according to the census numbers.

26:57Levi’s descendants

57The listed Levites included the clans from Levi’s sons Gershon, Kohat, and Merari, 58which were the Livnites, the Hevronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, and the Korahites. Also, Korah fathered Amram 59whose wife was Levi’s daughter Yokeved who’d been born in Egypt. They had two sons Aharon (Aaron) and Mosheh (Moses), and their older sister Miryam (Miriam). 60Aharon’s sons were Nadav, Avihu, Eleazar, and Itamar,[ref] 61but Nadav and Avihu had died when they’d offered Yahweh fire in a disobedient manner.[ref] 62The male Levites who were a month old or older came to 23,000, but they weren’t included in the above nation-wide count because they didn’t inherit land in the same way as other tribes.

26:63Census summary

63Those were the census results from when Mosheh and the priest Eleazar counted the Israelis on the Moav plains on the east side of the Yarden river opposite Yeriho (Jericho). 64None of the men on those lists were on the previous lists done by Mosheh and the priest Aharon when they’d counted the Israelis in the Sinai wilderness, 65because Yahweh had told them that they’d certainly die there in the wilderness until none of those alive were left other than Yefunneh’s son Kalev (Caleb) and Nun’s son Yehoshua (Joshua).

26:51 Slightly smaller than the total of 603,550 from the first census, see 1:46.
