TSNTyndale Study Notes:

26:1-65 After nearly forty years, Israel again registered their men of military age (cp. chs 1–4) as they camped on the plains of Moab . . . across from Jericho. The overall population had changed only slightly, with 603,550 in the first registration and 601,730 in the second. This nearly complete replacement of population (26:63-65) showed that the Lord was faithful to Israel in spite of their repeated acts of rebellion.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) they offered before Yahweh unacceptable fire

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_died Nādāⱱ and,Abihu in/on/at/with,offered,they fire unauthorized to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH )

Here the word “fire” is used to refer to “burning incense.” See how you translated a similar phrase in Numbers 3:4. Alternate translation: “they burned an incense offering to Yahweh in a way that he did not approve of”
