Readers’ Version

Literal Version

For the musical director: a song by David.

19The skies declare God’s talent and splendour,

≈ and outer space shows off his handiwork.

2Speech pours out day after day.

≈ Night after night it reveals knowledge.

3There’s no speech or words spoken.

≈ No voice can be heard

4yet their words go out over all the earth,

≈ and their speech to the end of the world.

He’s placed the sun in its home in the sky.[ref]

5The sun is like a bridegroom coming out of his room.

≈ It’s like a strong man who’s glad when he can run along his path.

6The sun rises from side of our view

≈ and crosses the sky to the other.

Nothing escapes its heat.

7Yahweh’s instructions are perfect, restoring our motivation.

Yahweh’s testimony is reliable, making simple people wise.

8Yahweh’s instructions are right, bringing inner fulfillment.

≈ Yahweh’s commands are pure, bringing light to the eyes.

9Respect for Yahweh is pure, enduring forever.

≈ Yahweh’s rules are correct and always right.

10They’re more valuable than gold, even fine gold.

≈ They’re sweeter than honey, even the honey that drips from the honeycomb.

11Yes, your servant is warned by Yahweh’s rules.

≈ A worthwhile reward comes from obeying them.

12Who can discern all their own errors?

≈ Cleanse me from hidden faults.

13Also, keep your servant from willful sins

≈ don’t let them not rule over me.

Then I’ll be perfect,

≈ and I will be innocent of terrible disobedience.

14Let the words from my mouth

≈ and even my inner thoughts

be acceptable in your sight, Yahweh

the secure place that I can run to,

≈ and the one who paid for my release from slavery.
