31:23 Yisrael’s future peace/prosperity

Both kingdoms

23 Yisrael’s (Israel) god, Commander-in-chief Yahweh says this:

When I restore the prosperity of Yehudah (Judah) and its cities,

again they’ll restore this saying,

‘May Yahweh bless you—

Yahweh who’s the repository of righteousness—

≈ mountain of holiness.’

24 Then Yehudah and all its cities will live in the land together—

farmers, and also shepherds who roam around with their flocks,

25 because I satisfy those who are weary,

≈ and I refresh everyone who’s become faint.

26 After that, I woke up and looked around,

and I’d had a good sleep.

27 Yahweh declares:

Listen, there’s a time coming when I’ll sow the Yisrael (Israel) and Yehudah (Judah) regions with the seeds of people and animals so they’ll multiply all around.

28 Just like how I supervised them to uproot and tear down,

and to overthrow and destroy and do harm,

now I’ll keep watch as they build and plant.

That is Yahweh’s declaration.

29 Then at that time, they’ll no longer say:

‘The parents ate sour grapes,

→ but it’s the teeth of the children that are set on edge.’[ref]

30 because everyone will die for their own disobedience,

i.e., whoever eats sour grapes will have their own teeth set on edge.

31 Listen, Yahweh declares that the time is coming when I’ll make a new agreement with the people of Yisrael (Israel) and Yehudah (Judah).[ref] 32 It won’t be like the agreement that I made with their ancestors at the time when I took hold of their hand to bring them out from Mitsrayim (Egypt), when they broke my agreement even though I was a husband to them. That is Yahweh’s declaration. 33 Yes, Yahweh declares that this is the agreement that I’ll make with the Israeli people after that time: I’ll put my law inside them—writing it on their heart,[ref] and I will be their god, and they will be a people for me. 34 Then each man will no longer teach his neighbour or his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahweh’, because all of them will know me—from the smallest of them to the greatest, because I’ll forgive their disobedience, and I won’t remember their wickedness any longer.[ref]

35 Yahweh says this:

I’m the one who gives the sun for light during the day,

≈ and the moon and the stars for light at night.

He stirs up the ocean, so that its waves roar,

His name is Commander-in-chief Yahweh.

36 Yahweh declares that if these elements stopped working,

then Yisrael (Israel) would also permanently cease to exist as a nation.

37 Yahweh says this:

If the skies above could be measured and be searched out,

as well as the foundations of the earth below,

then I would also reject all of Yisrael’s descendants

for everything that they’ve done.

That is Yahweh’s declaration.

38 Listen, Yahweh declares that the time is coming when the city will be rebuilt for Yahweh—from Hananel’s tower all the way to the Corner Gate. 39 After that, the measuring line will be stretched over Garev Hill and around to Go’ah. 40 Then all the valley of the corpses and ashes, and all the fields as far as the Kidron brook, to the corner of the Horses Gate toward the east, will be holiness to Yahweh. It won’t be uprooted, and it’ll never be overthrown again.

24 And_they _will _dwell in_it Yəhūdāh and_all cities _of_its together farmers and_those _who_they _journey with_flock.

25 If/because I _give _water _to the_throat the_weary and_all person who_it _has _become _faint I _fill.

26 On this I _awoke and_I _looked and_sleep _of_my it _was _pleasing to/for_me.

27 HERE days are_coming the _utterance _of YHWH and_I _will _sow DOM the _house _of Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) and_DOM the _house _of Yəhūdāh the_seed _of humankind and_the_seed _of animal[s].

28 And_it _was just_as I _kept _watch over_them to_pluck _up and_to_pull _down and_to_tear _down and_to_destroy and_to_do _harm so I _will _keep _watch over_them to_build and_to_plant the _utterance _of YHWH.

29 In _the_days the_those not people _will _say again fathers they _have _eaten sour _grape[s] and_the_teeth _of children they _will _be _blunt.

30 If/because (if) everyone for_his _own _of_iniquity he _will _die every _of the_humankind who_eats the _sour_grape[s] teeth _of_his they _will _be _blunt.

31 HERE days are_coming the _utterance _of YHWH and_I _will _make with the _house _of Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) and_DOM the _house _of Yəhūdāh/(Judah) a _covenant new.

32 Not like_covenant which I _made with ancestors _of_their in/on_day I_took _hold on_hand _of_their to_bring_them _out from_the _land _of Miʦrayim/(Egypt) who they they _broke DOM covenant _of_my and_I I _was _a _husband over_them the _utterance _of YHWH.

33 If/because this is_the_covenant which I _will _make with the _house _of Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) after the_days the_those the _utterance _of YHWH I _will _put DOM law _of_my in_their _inner _of_being and_on heart _of_their I_will _write _it and_I _will _be to/for_them (into)_god and_they they _will _become to_me (into)_a_people.

34 And_not they _will _teach again each DOM his/its_neighbour and_each DOM his/its_brother to_say know DOM YHWH if/because of _them _of_all they _will _know me (to)_from_their _of_little and_unto their _of_great the _utterance _of YHWH if/because I _will _forgive (to)_iniquity _of_their and_(to)_sin _of_their not I _will _remember again.

35 Thus YHWH who_gives the_sun for_light by _day the_fixed _order(s)_of the_moon and_the_stars for_light night who_stirs _up the_sea and_ waves _of_its _they _roared is_YHWH soldiers/messengers his/its_name he _says.

36 If the _fixed_order(s) the_these they _will _depart from_before_face _of_me the _utterance _of YHWH also the _offspring _of Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) they _will _cease from_being a _nation to/for_my_face/front all _of the_days.

37 Thus YHWH he _says if the_heavens from_to_above they _will _be _measured and_ the_foundations _of the_earth (to)_downwards _they _will _be _explored also I I _will _reject in_all the _offspring _of Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) on all _of that they _have _done the _utterance _of YHWH.

38 HERE days[fn][fn] the _utterance _of YHWH and_ the_city _it _will _be _rebuilt to/for_YHWH from_the _tower _of Ḩₐnan^ʼēl the _gate _of the _corner.

39 And_it _will _go _out again the _measuring-line _of[fn] of _(the)_measurement before_itself to the _hill _of Gārēⱱ and_it _will _turn towards_Goˊāh.

40 And_all the_valley the_corpses and_the _fatty_ash and_all the[fn] to the _wadi _of Qidrōn to the _corner _of the _gate _of the _horses eastward_toward will _be_holy to/for_YHWH not it _will _be _plucked _up and_not it _will _be _torn _down again forever_perpetuity.

Jeremiah Prophesies of a Restored Jerusalem

Jeremiah 31:38-4

Jeremiah 30-31, often referred to as the Book of Consolation, is ultimately a message of hope after a time of judgment and exile. Though Israel and Judah have suffered devastation for abandoning the Lord, one day the Lord himself would restore them. It is not clear whether these chapters were written after the devastation (including the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.) had already occurred, or they were speaking of it in the future. In any case, they clearly foretold of a day of restoration that lay ahead for God’s people. Jeremiah 31:38-40 specifically notes that Jerusalem would one day be rebuilt as part of this restoration, but not merely as it was before. The restored city would be expanded to include even the two valleys that had previously marked the boundary of three quarters of the city. The prophecy visualized plans being made for these new boundaries (presumably to be bounded by walls) by detailing the path of a measuring line that would go out from the northwest corner of the Temple Mount, encircle the city, and return to the southeast corner of the Temple Mount (see also the “Jerusalem during the Time of Nehemiah, circa 445 B.C.” map). The “whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes” that would be included likely refers to the Hinnom Valley. By the time of Jeremiah, this valley had become known as the location of Topheth, a pagan altar where children were burned as a sacrifice to the Canaanite god Molech (see 2 Kings 23:10; Jeremiah 7:31-32; 19:6-13). But Jeremiah foretold of a time when the Lord would bring such destruction upon Jerusalem that the valley would be filled with dead bodies (Jeremiah 19:6-9). Yet in the day of Israel and Judah’s restoration, the whole valley, along with the fields (or terraced gardens) running the whole length of the Kidron Valley, would be sacred to the Lord, and the new city would never again be uprooted or overthrown.
