19:1 The shattered flask

19 Then Yahweh said this:

Take some of the elders and some of the priests,

and go and buy a clay flask from the potter.

2 Then go out to the Ben -Hinnom Valley by the Broken Pottery Gate,

and then proclaim the words that I’ll tell you there.[ref]

3 Tell them:

You kings of Yehudah (Judah) and you residents of Yerushalem,

listen to Yahweh’s message.

Yisrael’s god, Commander-in-chief Yahweh says,

Listen, I’m about to send calamity to this place,

and the ears of everyone who hears about it will tingle.

4 I’m doing that because they’ve abandoned me and defiled this place—

they’ve burnt incense to other ‘gods’,

that neither they or their ancestors or Yehudah’s kings used to know.

Then they’ve filled this place with the blood of the innocent.

5 They built hilltop shrines to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal,

something I never instructed or talked about, nor did it even enter my mind.[ref]

6 So Yahweh declares that the time is coming when this place will no longer be called Tofet or the Valley of Ben-Hinnom, but rather, the ‘Valley of Slaughter’. 7 Then I’ll confound Yehudah and Yerushalem’s plans in this place, and I’ll have them struck down by their enemies’ swords and by those who want to kill them, and I’ll give their dead bodies to the birds and the wild animals for food. 8 Then I’ll make that city into a wasteland that’s something to scoff at—everyone who passes by will be appalled and will mock it because of all its disasters. 9 I’ll cause them to eat the flesh of their children and of their neighbours during the distress caused by the siege imposed by the enemies who want to kill them.

10 Then as the men who went with you watch, you must break that pottery flask 11 and tell them that Commander-in_chief Yahweh says this:

I’ll shatter this nation and this city, just like someone shatters a piece of pottery that can never be repaired again. They’ll bury the dead in Tofet until they run out of room. 12 Yahweh declares that I’ll do that to this place and its residents—making this city like Tofet 13 and Yerushalem’s houses including the houses of Yehudah’s kings will be defiled like that place, Tofet—all the houses on whose rooftops they burned incense to all the constellations and poured out drink offerings to other ‘gods’.

14 Then Yirmeyah returned from Tofet where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the temple courtyard and proclaimed to all the people, 15 “This is what Yisrael’s god, Commander-in-chief Yahweh, says: ‘Listen, every disaster that I’ve pronounced against these people, I’m about to send to this city and to all the villages around it, because they’ve been stubborn and failed to take notice of my messages.’ ”

4 Because that they_have _abandoned _me and_they _have _treated _as _foreign DOM the_place the_this and_they _have _made _smoke in_him/it to_gods other which not they_knew _them they and_ancestors _of_their and_the _kings _of Yəhūdāh and_they _have _filled DOM the_place the_this the_blood _of innocent_ones.
5 And_they _have _built DOM the _high _places _of (the)_Baˊal to_burn DOM children _of_their in_fire burnt _offerings to_Baˊal which not I _commanded and_not I _spoke and_not it _came _up on heart _of_my.
6 for_so/thus/hence HERE days are_coming the _utterance _of YHWH and_not it _will _be _called to_place the_this again (the)_Tofet and son _of Valley _of if/because (if) the _valley _of (the)_slaughter.
7 And_I _will _make _void DOM the _plan _of Yəhūdāh and_Yərūshālam/(Jerusalem) in_place the_this and_I_will _make _them _fall by_sword to_(the)_face _of/in _front _of/before enemies _of_their and_by_the _hand _of those _who_seek _of life _of_(of)_their and_I _will _give DOM corpse[s]_of_their to_food to_the _bird[s]_of the_heavens and_to_the _animal[s]_of the_earth/land.
8 And_I _will _make DOM the_city (the)_this into_a _waste and_into_a _hissing every _of one _who_passes _by on/upon_it(f) he _will _be _appalled and_he _will _hiss on all _of wounds _of_its.
9 And_I_will _make _them _eat DOM the _flesh _of their _sons _of_their and_DOM the _flesh _of their _daughters _of_their and_everyone the _flesh _of his/its_neighbour they _will _eat in_the_siege and_in_the_distress which they _will _bring _distress to/for_them enemies _of_their and_those _who_seek _of life _of_(of)_their.
10 And_you _will _break the_jar to_the _eyes _of the _men who_go with_you.
11 And_you _will _say[fn] to_them thus he _says YHWH soldiers/messengers thus I _will _break DOM the_people the_this and_DOM the_city (the)_this just_as someone _breaks DOM the _vessel _of the _potter which not it _will _be _able to_be _repaired again and_in_Tofet people _will _bury because_there_is_not room to_bury.
12 Thus I _will _do to_place the_this the _utterance _of YHWH and_to_inhabitants _of_its and_to_make DOM the_city (the)_this like_Tofet.
13 And_they _will _be the _houses _of Yərūshālam/(Jerusalem) and_the _houses _of the _kings _of Yəhūdāh/(Judah) like_the _place _of (the)_Tofet the _unclean_things to_all/each/any/every the_houses which people _made _smoke on roofs _of_their to_all/each/any/every the _soldier/messenger _of the_heavens and_ drink _offerings _they _poured _out to_gods other.
14 and_ Yirmə^yāh/(Jeremiah) _he _came from_(the)_Tofet where he_had _sent _him YHWH there to_prophesy and_he _stood in_the _court _of the _house _of YHWH and_he/it _said to all _of the_people.

Prophets of the Old Testament after 800 B.C.

If you ask someone today what biblical prophets did, they will likely tell you that they divinely foretold of future events. While this was often the case, most prophets in the Bible focused as much on “forthtelling” God’s messages as they did on “foretelling” the future. That is, their primary role was to simply “forthtell” divinely acquired messages to leaders and groups of people, and at times that included foretelling of coming judgment, blessing, rescue, etc. Also, though plenty of prophets (sometimes called “seers” in Scripture) often spoke in confrontational or eccentric language that put them at odds with kings and religious leaders, the biblical writers also applied the term prophet to people who communicated God’s messages in ways that many readers today might not think of as prophecy, such as worship leaders appointed by David to “prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals” (1 Chronicles 25:1). Similarly, the books of Joshua, Judges, 1 & 2 Samuel, and 1 & 2 Kings are typically categorized as history by Christians, but in the Hebrew canon they belong to the category of Former Prophets. The Lord raised up prophets throughout all of biblical history, from the giving of the law under Moses to the revelation of the last days by the apostle John, and the kings of Israel and Judah often recognized and supported specific people as official prophets of the royal court and consulted them to find out God’s perspective about official matters. Following is a list of nearly everyone designated as prophet or seer in the Old Testament and the primary area of their ministry.
