Cities for the Levites

Num 35:1–8

35While they were there on the Moav plains beside the Yarden river, Yahweh told Mosheh (Moses).[ref] 2“Tell the Israelis that out of the land that they’ll own, they must give the Levites cities for them to live in, as well as some pastureland around those cities. 3The cities will be for them to live in, and that pastureland will be for their herds and their flocks, and for their other animals. 4The pastureland must extend out half a kilometre around the walls of the Levites cities. 5Then going out a kilometre in each compass direction, that will also be their land.[fn] 6The Levites must be given forty-two cities to live in, plus you all must designate six refuge cities so that if someone accidentally kills another, they can flee to the refuge city. 7That would make a total of forty-eight cities, plus their pasturelands, to be given to the Levites. 8The larger tribes must give more cities than the smaller tribes, according to the area that they inherit.”

35:5 It’s not exactly clear what different activities would occur in these two rings of land, but remember that as much food as possible and animals would have to be brought into the city as soon as the residents received news of an approaching army.

Josh 21:1-42:

21Then the leaders of the Levites went to Eleazar the priest and to Yehoshua (Nun’s son) and to the Israeli elders[ref] 2at Shiloh (in the Canaan region) and told them, “Yahweh said through Mosheh that we should be given cities to live in, along with their surrounding fields for our livestock.” 3So the Israeli leaders gave these cities and the fields around them to the Levites for their inheritance as Yahweh had instructed:

4The first draw went to those of the Kohat clans who were descendants of Aharon the priest (from the Levites). They were allocated thirteen cities in the regions occupied by Yehudah, Shimeon, and Benyamin. 5The remaining Kohat clans were allocated ten cities in the regions occupied by Efrayim, Dan, and the Menashsheh half-tribe.

6The Gereshon clans were allocated thirteen cities in the regions occupied by Yissakar, Asher, Naftali, and by the Menashsheh half-tribe in the Bashan region.

7The Merari clans were allocated twelve cities in the regions occupied by Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

8So the Israeli leaders gave those cities and their surrounding fields to the Levites, just as Yahweh had instructed through Mosheh.

9These are the names of the cities allocated by the Israeli leaders (from the regions occupied by Yehudah and Shimeon) 10that were given to the Levite Kohat clans since they were selected first in the draw: 11Kiriat-Arba and the surrounding fields (now called Hebron—Arba was the father of Anak) in Yehudah’s hill country 12(although the surrounding countryside and villages had already been given to Yefunneh’s son Caleb). 13So Hebron was given to the descendants of Aharon the priest and assigned as a refuge city (for anyone who accidentally kills someone) along with the surrounding fields, along with Libnah, 14Yattir, Eshtemoa, 15Holon, Debir, 16Ain, Yuttah, and Beyt-Shemesh, all with their surrounding fields—a total of nine cities from within Yehudah and Shimeon’s territories. 17From Benyamin’s territories, the Israeli leaders assigned Gibeon, Geba, 18Anatot, and Almonfour cities and their surrounding fields. 19Thus the descendants of Aharon the priests received thirteen cities with their surrounding fields.

20The other Levite Kohat clans were allocated cities from within Efrayim’s territory: 21Shekem (which was assigned as a refuge city for anyone who accidentally kills someone), Gezer, 22Kibzaim, and Beyt-Horonfour cities with their surrounding fields. 23From Dan’s territory, they were allocated Elteke, Gibbeton, 24Ayyalon, and Gat-Rimmonfour cities with their surrounding fields. 25From the Menashsheh half-tribe’s territory, they were allocated Taanak and Gat-Rimmontwo cities with their surrounding fields. 26Thus the other Levite Kohat clans received ten cities with their surrounding fields.

27The Levite Gereshon clans were allocated cities from within the Menashsheh half-tribe’s territory: Golan in the Bashan (which was assigned as a refuge city for anyone who accidentally kills someone) and Be’eshtarah—two cities with their surrounding fields. 28From Yissakar’s territory, they were allocated Kishyon, Daberat, 29Yarmut, and Eyn-Gannimfour cities with their surrounding fields. 30From Asher’s territory, they were allocated Mishal, Abdon, 31Helkat, and Rehobfour cities with their surrounding fields. 32From Naftali’s territory, they were allocated Kedesh in the Galilee (which was assigned as a refuge city for anyone who accidentally kills someone), Hammot-Dor, and Kartanthree cities with their surrounding fields. 33Thus the Levite Gereshon clan received thirteen cities with their surrounding fields.

34The remaining Levite Merari clans were allocated cities from within Zebulun’s territory: Yokneam, Kartah, 35Dimnah, and Nahalalfour cities with their surrounding fields. 36From Reuben’s territory, they were allocated Bezer, Yahaz, 37Kedemot, and Mephaatfour cities with their surrounding fields. 38From Gad’s territory, they were allocated Ramot in the Gilead (which was assigned as a refuge city for anyone who accidentally kills someone), Mahanaim, 39Heshbon, and Yazerfour cities with their surrounding fields. 40Thus the Levite Merari clan received twelve cities in the draw, along with their surrounding fields.

41So altogether the Levites received forty-eight cities and their surrounding fields from with the territories of the other tribes42each of those cities had fields around them for their livestock to graze on.
