TSNTyndale Study Notes:

32:7 Ask your father: History instructs those who are willing to learn from it. In the wisdom tradition of the Old Testament, the father was given the task of teaching his children the lessons that had previously been transmitted to him (see, e.g., Prov 1:8; 2:1; 3:1).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Moses speaks a poetic song to the people of Israel.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / you

(Occurrence 0) Call to mind … think about … your father … show you … your elders … tell you

(Some words not found in UHB: remember days old consider years generations and, generation ask I_will_show=you(ms) and, inform, you elders, your and, tell to/for=you(fs) )

Moses speaks to the Israelites as if they were one man, so the words “you” and “your” here are singular.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) Call to mind

(Some words not found in UHB: remember days old consider years generations and, generation ask I_will_show=you(ms) and, inform, you elders, your and, tell to/for=you(fs) )

This is an idiom. Alternate translation: “Remember”

(Occurrence 0) days of ancient times

(Some words not found in UHB: remember days old consider years generations and, generation ask I_will_show=you(ms) and, inform, you elders, your and, tell to/for=you(fs) )

Alternate translation: “days of long ago.” Moses refers to the time period when the ancestors of the people of Israel were alive.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Some words not found in UHB: remember days old consider years generations and, generation ask I_will_show=you(ms) and, inform, you elders, your and, tell to/for=you(fs) )

This is a repetition of what Moses just said in the previous portion. Moses wants the people of Israel to focus on their history as a nation.

(Occurrence 0) he will show you

(Some words not found in UHB: remember days old consider years generations and, generation ask I_will_show=you(ms) and, inform, you elders, your and, tell to/for=you(fs) )
