TSNTyndale Study Notes:

36:17 Covenant curses had come to Israel because God’s people had defiled . . . their own land by their sinful behavior.
• A menstrual cloth became polluted by contact with a woman’s monthly flow of blood. This natural process was not sinful, but it was defiling in the same way that any loss of bodily life-fluids such as blood, sweat (see study note on 44:17-19), or semen made people ceremonially unclean (see Lev 15).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) Son of man

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind house_of Yisrael lived on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in land,their_own and,defiled DOM,it in/on/at/with,ways,their and,in/on/at/with,deeds,their like,uncleanness the,menstrual_period she/it_was conduct,their in,sight,me )

God calls Ezekiel this to emphasize that Ezekiel is only a human being. God is eternal and powerful, but humans are not. See how you translated this in Ezekiel 2:1. Alternate translation: “Mortal person” or “Human”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) the house of Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind house_of Yisrael lived on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in land,their_own and,defiled DOM,it in/on/at/with,ways,their and,in/on/at/with,deeds,their like,uncleanness the,menstrual_period she/it_was conduct,their in,sight,me )

Here “house” represents people. Alternate translation: “the people of Israel”

(Occurrence 0) with their ways and their deeds

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind house_of Yisrael lived on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in land,their_own and,defiled DOM,it in/on/at/with,ways,their and,in/on/at/with,deeds,their like,uncleanness the,menstrual_period she/it_was conduct,their in,sight,me )

Alternate translation: “by the way they lived and the things they did”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) Their ways were like the unclean menstruation of a woman before me

This compares how the people behaved to a woman’s unclean menstruation rags. This emphasizes how disgusting their behaviors were to Yahweh. Alternate translation: “Their ways were as disgusting to me as the unclean menstruation of a woman”

(Occurrence 0) menstruation of a woman

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind house_of Yisrael lived on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in land,their_own and,defiled DOM,it in/on/at/with,ways,their and,in/on/at/with,deeds,their like,uncleanness the,menstrual_period she/it_was conduct,their in,sight,me )
