TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:14-16 Mount Tabor, with its forest cover, was a strategic location, and the rush down the hill must have surprised the unsuspecting Canaanites. The battle was won, however, because it was the Lord’s war, not because of human strategy and tactics.
• Nothing is said here about why the chariots were so ineffective; this awaits the poetic version of the account (5:21).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) Barak pursued

(Some words not found in UHB: and,Barak pursued after the,chariots and=after the,army until חֲרֹשֶׁת הַגּוֹיִם and,fell all/each/any/every army Sisera by,edge sword not left until one(ms) )

Here “Barak” represents himself and his army. Alternate translation: “Barak and his soldiers chased”

(Occurrence 0) Harosheth

(Some words not found in UHB: and,Barak pursued after the,chariots and=after the,army until חֲרֹשֶׁת הַגּוֹיִם and,fell all/each/any/every army Sisera by,edge sword not left until one(ms) )

Translate this the same way you did in Judges 4:2.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) the whole army of Sisera was killed by the edge of the sword

(Some words not found in UHB: and,Barak pursued after the,chariots and=after the,army until חֲרֹשֶׁת הַגּוֹיִם and,fell all/each/any/every army Sisera by,edge sword not left until one(ms) )

Here “sword” represents the swords and other weapons that the soldiers used in battle. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Barak and his soldiers killed Sisera’s whole army with their swords” (See also: figs-activepassive)
