TSNTyndale Study Notes:

50:1–51:64 This message of judgment on Babylon is the longest for any nation except Judah, and threats against Babylon are interwoven with promises for Judah’s restoration. Babylon was the Lord’s agent for destroying the other civilizations of the Near East, but it was also guilty of its own sins. The Lord would judge Babylon by doing to her what she had done to others (50:15).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Yahweh is speaking to his people in captivity in Babylon.

(Occurrence 0) Leave from the midst of Babylon

(Some words not found in UHB: flee from,midst Babel and,from,land Kasdim go_out and,be like,male_goats to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before flock_of_sheep/goats )

This command is addressed to the people of Israel who were in exile in Babylon.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) be like male goats that leave

(Some words not found in UHB: flee from,midst Babel and,from,land Kasdim go_out and,be like,male_goats to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before flock_of_sheep/goats )

Male goats tend to be more independent than the rest of the flock. This could mean: (1) they should be the first to leave Babylon or (2) they should lead the rest of the Israelites away from Babylon.
