TSNTyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hypo

(Occurrence 0) even if it is in Jonathan my son, he will surely die

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when he/it_lived YHWH the,saves DOM Yisrael that/for/because/then/when if is,it in/on/at/with,Jonathan son,my that/for/because/then/when to_die he_must_die and,not answered,him from=all the,people )

Saul stated this as a hypothetical situation because he did not believe that Jonathan was guilty.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) But none of the men among all the people answered him

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when he/it_lived YHWH the,saves DOM Yisrael that/for/because/then/when if is,it in/on/at/with,Jonathan son,my that/for/because/then/when to_die he_must_die and,not answered,him from=all the,people )

The people remained silent because most of them knew that Jonathan had broken Saul’s oath. This can be stated explicitly. Alternate translation: “His men knew who was guilty, but none of them said anything to Saul”
