TSNTyndale Study Notes:

32:38 ate the fat . . . drank the wine: Most polytheistic religious systems that practice sacrifice include the notion that the gods find nourishment in the sacrifices made to them. Israel fell victim to this superstitious belief for a time before the Lord graciously taught them otherwise and restored them to himself (32:36).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) The gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offerings?

(Some words not found in UHB: which/who fat sacrifices,their ate drank wine libations,their rise_up and,help,you_all let_it_be for,you_all shelter )

Here Yahweh mocks the people of Israel for offering sacrifices to other gods. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “The gods to whom the Israelites offered meat and wine have not come to help them.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / irony

(Occurrence 0) Let them rise up and help you; let them be your protection

(Some words not found in UHB: which/who fat sacrifices,their ate drank wine libations,their rise_up and,help,you_all let_it_be for,you_all shelter )

Yahweh says this to mock the Israelites. He knows these gods cannot help them. Alternate translation: “These idols are not even able to get up and help or to protect you”
