ULT For John came to you in the way of righteousness, but you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. But you, having seen this, did not change your minds afterward to believe in him.

USTI say that because, when John the Baptizer was with you, he did what was right. However, you did not trust him. In contrast, prostitutes and people who collect taxes did trust him. When you realized that even they trusted John, you did not regret how you were acting and trust him after all.

BSB For John came to you in a righteous way and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

TCNTFor John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but tax collectors and prostitutes believed him. Yet even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

T4T I say this to you because, even though John the Baptizer explained to you how to live righteously, you did not believe his message. But tax collectors and prostitutes believed his message, and they turned away from their sinful behavior. In contrast, you, even though you saw what they did, refused to turn away from your sinful behavior, and you did not believe John’s message.”

LEB For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did believe him. And when[fn] you sawit,[fn] you did not even change your minds laterso as to believe in him.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

for

Here, the word For introduces a basis for what Jesus said in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a reason or basis for a claim, or you could leave For untranslated. Alternate translation: “That is because” or “Here is why I say that:”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / go

ἦλθεν

came

In a context such as this, your language might say “went” instead of came. Alternate translation: “went”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐν ὁδῷ δικαιοσύνης

in /the/_way ˱of˲_righteousness

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of righteousness, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “in the righteous way”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν ὁδῷ δικαιοσύνης

in /the/_way ˱of˲_righteousness

Here Jesus uses the word way to refer to behavior in life. More specifically, he could mean that: (1) John lived a life characterized by righteousness. Alternate translation: “living righteously” or “behaving in righteous ways” (2) John showed others how to live lives characterized by righteousness. Alternate translation: “to show you how to be righteous”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / you

οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ

not ˱you_all˲_believed ˱in˲_him

Here, you is plural and refers to the religious leaders, so use the plural form in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

οὐ μετεμελήθητε

not ˱you_all˲_/were/_regretful

Here, the phrase change your minds refers to deciding to do something that one had previously chosen not to do. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable phrase or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “did not have second thoughts” or “did not reconsider”
