ULT And a man of the space between came out from the camp of the Philistines, Goliath was his name, from Gath. His height was six cubits and a span.

UST Then a great warrior, three meters tall, came out from the Philistine camp. He was Goliath, from the city of Gath.

BSB § Then a champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out from the Philistine camp. He was six cubits and a span in height,[fn]

17:4 Goliath was approximately 9 feet 9 inches or 297 centimeters tall; LXX, DSS, and Josephus four cubits and a span in height (approximately 6 feet 9 inches or 206 centimeters tall).

OEB A champion came out from the camp of the Philistines. His name was Goliath of Gath and he was over nine feet in height.

WEB A champion out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span[fn] went out.

17:4 A cubit is the length from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow on a man’s arm, or about 18 inches or 46 centimeters. A span is the length from the tip of a man’s thumb to the tip of his little finger when his hand is stretched out (about half a cubit, or 9 inches, or 22.8 cm.) Therefore, Goliath was about 9 feet and 9 inches or 2.97 meters tall.

NET Then a champion came out from the camp of the Philistines. His name was Goliath; he was from Gath. He was close to seven feet tall.

LSV And a man goes out, the champion from the camps of the Philistines, his name [is] Goliath, from Gath; his height [is] six cubits and a span [[or four cubits and a span]],

FBV Then a champion[fn] came out of the Philistine camp. His name was Goliath from Gath, and he was six cubits and a span tall.[fn]

17:4 “Champion”: literally “a man of the space between.” This is usually taken to mean a champion who will fight another in a kind of proxy battle but its precise meaning is uncertain as it only occurs here and in verse 23 in the whole of the Old Testament.

17:4 “Six cubits and a span tall.” This is equivalent to around nine and a half feet. The Septuagint and a manuscript from Qumran have four cubits and a span, equivalent to six and a half feet.

T4T Then Goliath, from Gath city, came out from the Philistine camp. He was a champion warrior/soldier. He was over 9 feet/3 meters► tall.

LEB Then a champion[fn] went out from the camps ofthe Philistines, whose name was Goliath from Gath. His height was six cubits and a span.[fn]

?:? Literally “a man of the space between”

?:? A cubit was about eighteen inches and a span about nine inches, so the Masoretic Hebrew text gives the height of nine feet, nine inches. Ancient Greek versions variously give Goliath’s height as four, five, or sixteen cubits.

BBE And a fighter came out from the tents of the Philistines, named Goliath of Gath; he was more than six cubits tall.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

17:4 champion: In ancient times, rival forces would sometimes agree to let selected individuals from each side decide a conflict. This reduced casualties and other costs. The same kind of combat is reflected in 2 Sam 2:12-17.
• Gath was one of five Philistine cities with a reputation for having giants as citizens (2 Sam 21:15-22).
