Readers’ Version

Literal Version

18None of the Levites (including the priests) will receive any land as an inheritance like the other Israelis. Instead, the people’s offerings to Yahweh will be their inheritance to sustain them. 2Yes, unlike fellow Israelis, they won’t have any inherited landYahweh is their inheritance like he told them.[ref]

3This is the requirement that the people do for the priests: whenever they bring a bull or a sheep as a sacrifice, they must give the shoulder, the cheeks, and the stomach to the priest. 4Also you must give the Levites the firstfruits of your grain, your grape juice, your olive oil, and the wool shorn from your sheep, 5because your god Yahweh chose them out of all your tribes for them and their descendants permanently to serve him.

6If a Levite chooses to move his family from their town in any part of Yisrael and sincerely wants to go to the place that Yahweh will choose, 7then he can join the other Levites there to serve his god Yahweh 8and must be given a portion like all the others. (He can keep anything he got from the sale of their family home.)

9When you enter the land that your god Yahweh is about to give you, don’t imitate the disgusting habits of those peoples. 10There mustn’t be anyone among you who passes their son or daughter through fire, or who uses divination or omens to try to tell the future, or who practices sorcery,[ref] 11or who puts spells on people, or who tries to talk to spirits of deceased people, 12because anyone who does those things is abhorrent to Yahweh. It’s because of those kinds of things that your god Yahweh will drive those other peoples away ahead of you. 13You must be a blameless nation in the eyes of your god Yahweh,[ref] 14because the groups that you’ll expel from the land rely on fortune-tellers and diviners, but your god Yahweh won’t allow you to do that.

9if/because you will_have_gone into the_earth/land which YHWH god_of_your is_about_to_give to/for_you(fs) not you_will_learn for_doing like_abhorrent_practices_of the_nations the_those.

11And_throws a_spell and_consults a_necromancer and_spiritist and_inquires (to) the_dead.
12If/because is_(the)_abomination_of YHWH every_of one_who_does_of (of)_these_things and_in/on/at/with_because_of the_detestable_things the_these YHWH god_of_your is_about_to_dispossess DOM_them from_before_of_you.
13Blameless you_will_be with YHWH god_of_your.
14if/because the_nations the_these which you are_about_to_dispossess DOM_them to soothsayers and_near/to diviners they_listen and_you(ms) not thus he_has_permitted[fn][fn][fn] to/for_yourself(m) YHWH god_of_your.

15Your god Yahweh will select a man from among you and send him as a prophet like me. You must take notice of him,[ref] 16since you begged your god Yahweh from the bottom of Mt. Horev when you said, “We can’t handle directly hearing the voice of our god Yahweh and looking at this terrible fire. Let us go home so we won’t die here.” 17Then Yahweh told me, “They’re right in what they’re saying. 18I’ll choose a prophet from among them and see him. I’ll tell him what to say, and he can pass it on to them, 19and if anyone doesn’t listen to what he says with my authority, I’ll punish that person as if they ignored me.[ref] 20However, if the prophet says things that I didn’t tell him to say but claims they came from me, or if he speaks in the name of other gods, then that prophet must die.”

21Now if you ask yourselves, “How can we recognise a message that didn’t come from Yahweh?” 22then when the prophet speaks in Yahweh’s name but that thing doesn’t happen, then you’ll know that it didn’t come from Yahweh. The prophet spoke it assuming that I’d want that, but you don’t need to be afraid of him.

15A_prophet from_among_of_you from_brothers_of_your like_me he_will_raise_up to/for_yourself(m) YHWH god_of_your to_him/it listen.
16According_to_all that you_asked from_with YHWH god_of_your in/on/at/with_Ḩorēⱱ in/on_day the_assembly to_say not let_me_repeat to_hear DOM the_voice_of YHWH god_of_my and_DOM the_fire the_big/large/great(fs) the_this not let_me_see again and_not I_will_die.
17And_ YHWH _he/it_said to_me they_have_done_well that_which they_have_spoken.

19And_it_was the_man who not he_will_listen to messages_of_my which he_will_speak in/on/at/with_name_of_my I I_will_require from_with_him.
20Nevertheless the_prophet who he_will_act_presumptuously to_speak a_message in/on/at/with_name_of_my DOM that_which not commanded_him to_speak and_which he_will_speak in/on_name_of gods other and_die the_prophet (the)_that.
21And_because/when you_will_say in/on/at/with_heart_of_your how will_we_know DOM the_message which not spoken_him YHWH.
